Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship
Curriculum
Year 1
The first year of fellowship focuses on clinical experience with rotations in outpatient and in-patient high-risk obstetrics, prenatal diagnosis, and genetics. Specific opportunities to develop research questions and meet with faculty mentors are included in the first year.
Year 2
The majority of the second year is focused on research. Fellows have the opportunity to take courses on-site from Graduate School of Medicine faculty or take courses from the University of Tennessee’s main campus.
Year 3
The third year is focused on both clinical and research with experiences individualized to the specific fellow needs to prepare for future endeavors.

Notes
Clinic = Outpatient MFM (consults and outpatient clinics: High Risk Clinic, Substance Abuse Clinic, Diabetic Clinic and Consults
Electives = 7 months (see below for options available)
Research = 12 months
MICU or SICU = 1 month
Participating Sites: All clinical MFM, MICU, SICU and Elective Blocks occur at the primary site, University of Tennessee Medical Center. Course work may occur at the primary site or the Univeristy of Tennessee, Knoxville
Elective Options
- Family Planning, Complex Contraception with our Reproductive and Family Planning Specialists - 4 weeks
- Medical Critical Care with our Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Faculty - 4 weeks
- Addiction Medicine with our MFM Faculty, Psychology, and Additional Medicine - 4 weeks
- Fetal Echocardiology with our Pediatric Cardiologists - 4 weeks, but will also be distributed throughout the year in Diabetic Clinic
- Obstetric Anesthesia with our Obstetric Anesthesiologist - 2 or 4 weeks, may be taken in conjunction with another selection
- Adult Infectious Diseases with Adult ID Specialists and Infection Control Team - 2 or 4 weeks, may be taken in conjunction with another selection
- NICU (2 weeks) Genetics (2 weeks) - Total of 4 weeks
- Embryology (2 weeks) Placental Pathology (2 weeks) - Total of 4 weeks
- Additional Research or Course Work Time - 2 or 4 week, may be taken in conjunction with another selection

Medical Simulation
Simulation is the imitation of real-life experience including the use of task and virtual reality trainers, as well as standardized patients to refine technical and clinical skills of healthcare professionals. At the UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation, the goal is continual improvement in quality of patient care and safety through education, practice, and assessment. Simulation can replicate almost any diagnostic or therapeutic situation, from simple IV insertions using low-fidelity task technology to complicated surgeries using high-fidelity, computerized manikins or virtual reality modules.
