Letter from the Chief Fellows

Dear Prospective Candidate

Welcome to the University of Tennessee Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program in Knoxville! We are excited for your interest  in our fellowship program. We take pride in our commitment to provide the top oncologic care in the region. By the conclusion of your fellowship, you will be a confident, well-rounded hematologist oncologist well-prepared for any chosen career path.

Our fellowship graduated its first inaugural class in 2025, and we are excited to continue the journey.  Training is based at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee which is the academic tertiary care center for the region. We offer a balanced rotation schedule where you will become immersed in medical oncology, malignant hematology, and benign hematology where you will be exposed to a broad range of pathologies.  You will work one on one with exceptional faculty mentors who are invested in the education of our fellows.  In addition, you will also have the opportunity to engage in a variety of research projects alongside faculty mentors. Research support is available to conduct the projects that interest you including prospective studies.

Particular strengths of our program include a rich clinical exposure as well as friendly and approachable faculty.  Our smaller class size allows the opportunity to get to know the faculty well and creates a family-like atmosphere.

East Tennessee is one of the most beautiful regions in the country. We have the Smoky Mountain National Park in our backyard as well as scenic hiking and biking trails throughout the city.  Knoxville is also the home of the Tennessee Volunteers attracting Tennessee sports fans from far and wide.  There are excellent dining options throughout the city as well as a rich arts culture.
We are excited to meet you during the interview season. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us!

Sincerely,
Chief Fellows Dr. Lindsay Rumberger and Dr. Omar Alsharif
