The Department of Family Medicine, in conjunction with the Departments of Emergency Medicine of the University of Tennessee Medical Center and East Tennessee Children's Hospital, has established a one year fellowship in Emergency Medicine. The fellowship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience that will enable the fellow to apply primary care medical training to the assessment, treatment, and management of emergent and urgent medical illnesses and injuries in urban and rural practice settings. The fellow will work under the supervision of faculty experienced in all aspects of Emergency Medicine in a busy tertiary emergency department as well as a busy pediatric hospital emergency department. Regular didactic sessions include topic reviews and procedural skills labs. The emergency medicine fellow will also have the opportunity to ride-along with prehospital emergency care services including Rural-Metro ambulance service, Knoxville Fire Department, and Lifestar.
Fellows will be graduating or have graduated from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic Family Medicine residency. The fellow will work in the emergency departments of The University of Tennessee Medical Center and East Tennessee Children's Hospital, rotating on Trauma Surgery and Medical Intensive Care Unit. The fellow additionally will learn advanced skills in intubation and emergency radiological interpretation. The fellow will operate at a PGY-4 level and will be under the supervision of faculty during the course of the fellowship.
