Fourth Year Electives - Anesthesiology

ANE - 45020

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours.  The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. This elective provides an opportunity to experience the many facets of the practice of anesthesiology while emphasizing the role of the anesthesiologist as a perioperative physician. The main focus of the rotation is centered on supervised practical experience in the administration of intravenous, inhaled and regional anesthesia. Exposure to the anesthesiologist's role in critical care medicine, acute and chronic pain management, obstetrical anesthesia and pre-operative evaluation is also provided. During the rotation, medical students will have multiple opportunities to improve clinical skills in airway management, central venous and arterial cannulation. Between June - December (Blocks 5 - 12), Anesthesia Specialty Only.  All other specialties are welcome to rotate after completion of interview season during Blocks 1-4. We are no longer using the term "audition rotation" for any student.  This is an Anesthesia Medical Student rotation and does not imply or guarantee an interview.

ANE-35020

This is a face to face clinical rotation. This career exploration course (CE) will allow third year medical students to explore this discipline as a potential career choice. Introductory exposure to the specialty of perioperative medicine. This is largely an experiential rotation with exposure to patients in the perioperative setting,  including general and regional anesthetics, obstetrical anesthesia, trauma and emergency surgical procedures, with additional emphasis on preoperative and postoperative care. The learner is expected to be an active participant in the rotation while not maintaining sole responsibility for patient care during the rotation. Due to lack of space for accommodation during first semester, we will accept M3 students during 2nd semester only; however, we will accept more students than previously allowed during 2nd semester to ensure the same number of opportunities exist for students. Prior authorization required to ensure we are not overbooked when looking at all rotations together as a whole and space available.

 ANE-40120

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student will function as a junior intern with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The medical student will be exposed to the various care experiences that require the services of anesthesiologists, from preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, postoperative management, acute and chronic pain management.  Medical students will work with resident physicians and attending anesthesiologists across the spectrum of consultant anesthesiologist care, including preoperative evaluation in the PAT clinic (Preoperative Anesthesia Testing), cases in Obstetric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Perioperative TEE, Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management, Chronic and Interventional Pain Management, Pediatric Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Ambulatory Anesthesia. While observation of various procedures and operations will be a considerable component of the rotation, medical students should anticipate and indeed expect to be engaged and participate in certain common procedures at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist. Within these subspecialty areas, the medical student will have the opportunity to participate in simulation-based learning on airway management, central line placement, and arterial line placement, as well as applicable use of ultrasound guidance technology. The medical students are expected to be proactive in seeking opportunities to perform procedures appropriate with their training and under the supervision of and at the discretion of the attending anesthesiologist of record. Between June- December (Blocks 5-12), Anesthesia Specialty Only. All other specialties are welcome to rotate after completion of interview season during Blocks 1-4. We are no longer using the term "audition rotation" for any student. This is an Anesthesia Medical Student rotation and does not imply or guarantee an interview. JI ANES rotators will be required to present a short presentation at end of rotation to faculty and/or residents over an assigned topic of something they have learned. Details to follow. JI ANES rotators will take no more than two on-call shifts or partial on-call shifts while on 4-week rotation to experience weekend shifts and 24-hour shifts.
