I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Educational Endowment

Dr. I. Reid Collmann was a former Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine. To honor his years of leadership and service, the I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Educational Endowment was established. The purpose of this endowment is to insure and enhance the quality of medical student education programs.

Dr. Collmann initiated the I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Education Fund to give students an opportunity similar to his own student research experience. As a young medical student, Dr. Collmann quickly learned firsthand how research affects patient care. His wish of establishing this fund was built with hopes of empowering medical students with this same knowledge. The awareness of research's impact on patient care is information that will build a solid foundation for the remainder of the student's medical career.

Program Description and Requirements

The I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Educational Scholarship is an 8-week summer research program designed to provide medical students an in-depth biomedical research experience. Scholars selected for the program will engage in research under the supervision and mentorship of a clinical and/or translational researcher at UTGSM on the UT Medical Center campus in Knoxville. Space for this program is limited, and preference is given to UTHSC M1 and M2 students.

Application and Assignment Process

Applications are being accepted March 1, 2024 - March 31, 2024.

Scholarship selections will be decided in early April and students will be notified of their selection mid-April. Work assignments are given as soon as possible after acceptance so that the students can begin to work with their mentors to complete program-specific training modules (including but not limited to UTK Biosafety, IACUC, IBC, CITI, etc.) in advance of the program start date and at the discretion of their assigned mentor.

Scholars will participate in an active research project under the direction of the UTGSM faculty they are matched with during the selection process. As part of the application, applicants will be asked to indicate their top area of interest in medicine and top research interest. Before completing the application below, applicants are encouraged to learn more about our translational research laboratories and clinical research faculty by visiting the research section of our website. Every effort is made to match students with his/her interests. However, your choices cannot guarantee placement within a specified program.
