Visiting Student Guidelines
Starting April 2008, the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine will be using VSAS, the new Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications from students attending US LCME accredited schools. International and Osteopathic Students: VSAS is not yet available for international or osteopathic student use. Please use the Extramural Electives Compendium (EEC) for visiting student application information. US LCME medical students, please complete a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates. Criteria
The University of Tennessee, College of Medicine has elective opportunities available at its sites in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Jackson for students from other medical schools. To be eligible for consideration, students must meet the following criteria:
- Visiting students must be candidate for the M.D. or D.O. degree in good standing in an accredited medical school. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Dean of Medical Education or his/her designee.
- Visiting students shall be limited to a maximum of 12 weeks of experience within the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine during their medical school career. Electives will be assigned to visiting students only after all University of Tennessee students have been scheduled.
- All visiting students provide documentation of the following:
- coverage for malpractice/liability insurance in the amount of $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate from their institution or from acceptable other sources,
- health insurance,
- required immunizations for measles and rubella,
- completed the Hepatitis B vaccine series,
- TB skin test results from within the past year,
- CPR certification within the past year,
- Recent background check (at matriculation or more recently), and
- HIPPA training
- Visiting students must have completed instruction in the basic physical examination and have a working knowledge of general ward procedures. All electives require that the student has completed the basic Family Medicine, Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics-Gynecology clerkships. All students must have met the prerequisites of the clerkship to which they are applying.
Application Process
An original Visiting Student Application form must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs no earlier than April of the student's junior year and at least four weeks prior to beginning the rotation
This form is not available online. Students attending U.S. medical schools may obtain applications from the Office of Student Affairs .

It is expected that your clerkship work at The University of Tennessee will be part of the graduation requirements of your school. For this reason, it is essential that an authorization for taking an elective from your Dean's Office be submitted. Section II of the Visiting Student Application provides for this authorization.
You must be in good standing in your final year at your institution and authorized to take an elective. Currently, students who are regularly enrolled in another medical school and paying tuition at that school are not charged tuition at The University of Tennessee for brief elective periods. This policy may change in the future, and the school reserves the right to charge tuition at any time.
It is the individual student's responsibility to secure housing. Information is available from the Office of Student Affairs on low-cost accommodations for visiting medical students.
