Dr. Michael Freeman Named Chairman of the Department of Surgery

After a national search, Paul Hauptman, MD, Dean, has announced that Michael Freeman, MD, Professor of Surgery, has been selected to become the next Department of Surgery Chair and to lead the Department's growth into the next decade. Dr. Freeman has served as Interim Chair since October 2018, and he has formulated bold plans for the future in clinical care, medical education and research.

Dr. Freeman follows a long line of esteemed surgical leaders at The University of Tennessee Medical Center including Kimball I. Maull, MD, Daniel L. Diamond, MD, and Mitchell H. Goldman, MD.

Dr. Freeman attended the Medical College of Georgia where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors and completed general surgery residency and a vascular surgery fellowship at Barnes Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Freeman has been Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program and Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery. He has mentored over 25 vascular surgery fellows and is the author of 7 book chapters and 100 papers in the field. He has also assumed multiple leadership roles at both The University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he is a highly respected clinician, and at multiple national and regional professional societies, including positions on the Executive Board of The Society for Vascular Surgery and the Executive Council of the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery.
