Course Overview

The Big 4 Cancer Conference for 2023 will focus on four distinct practice-based problems. The first is gaps in management of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer management is dependent on timely, multi-disciplinary care.  In our region, management of esophageal cancer can be fragmented, delayed and critical treatments omitted. The focus of the conference will be on reviewing best practices, the recommended timing and order of treatment, and access to resources needed to ensure best practices.

The second topic is focused on primary and metastatic malignancies to the central nervous system. Tumors in the central nervous system are uncommon. The treatment options have expanded recently, and many providers are unaware of current treatments, preventative technology and current recommendations for referrals to surgery, radiation oncology, and palliative therapies.

The third topic is focused on the management of side effects of systemic therapy. The field of oncology has long been focused on the management of side effects. However, effective management varies by provider and current practices and evidence-based recommendations are not always known, understood, or followed. There is a regional opportunity to discuss best practices for recognizing and managing chemotherapy and immunotherapy induced side effects.

Finally, we will focus on the care continuum for breast cancer. The care for breast cancer is standardized for most aspects of treatment though variations and exceptions do exist. We will reinforce the current standards and discuss exceptions including case-based examples. Further, regional disparities do influence the ability to provide timely care and we will discuss best practices for ensuring optimal care.
