Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and the practice of surgery has been following suit. Changes in reimbursement, outcomes measure, therapies, practice venues and systems, government oversight and regulation, and education are areas that effect the practice of surgery and the education of surgical residents. Surgeons in both the private practice and academic worlds need to know the trends in this environment, how to adapt to them and how to plan for the future. Surgical educators needs to know similar information to plan the education of students, residents and fellows. Knowledge of the past, present and potential trends in medical and surgical care will facilitate preparation for the future and enable surgeons to respond more competently. It will also enable surgical educators to teach residents and other learners so that they will also be able to make judgements about their future needs.
Dr. L.D. Britt was a recent President of the American College of Surgeons and has been at the forefront of surgical interaction with the changing healthcare environment and the institutions that have fomented that change. As one of the most articulate spokespersons in surgery, Dr. Britt will share his experience and help learners understand what to expect in the future through a lecture with a following discussion. Dr. Britt is known throughout the education world as an engaging and educational speaker and his lectures are a perfect venue for him to convey to the learners what the future holds in surgery.
