Course Overview

The burden of cancer on our population is expected to rise sharply over the next 20 years. Overall cancer incidence is expected to increase by 45% between 2010 and 2030, and cancer will become the nation’s leading cause of death largely due to older adults and minorities. By 2030, approximately 70% of all cancers will be diagnosed in older adults, and 28% of all cancers will be diagnosed in minorities. Cancer is an enormous health burden in the United States, touching every region and socioeconomic level. Today, cancer accounts for one in every eight deaths worldwide. Alarmingly, certain cancer sites have a particularly high mortality rates. The following data reflects the American Cancer Society’s Facts and Figures on incidence and mortality rates projected in 2015:

Unless substantial improvements in cancer therapy and/or prevention strategies emerge, the number of cancer deaths may also grow dramatically over the next 20 years. Primary care physicians have a central role in cancer prevention and control services involving gastrointestinal, melanoma, gynecologic and urologic cancers, yet relatively little attention has been given to their needs for continuing medical education (CME) that clarify or update screening guidelines, enhance recognition of signs or symptoms of cancer, and address ongoing health issues in patients treated for cancer.

We are moving from the classic model of physician decision-making to shared decision-making and that is going to make a big impact on cancer care. There is growing understanding nationwide of the need for a comprehensive approach to the treatment of cancer patients. Based on data from many scientific trials demonstrating the benefits of multimodal treatments for various cancers, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) is strongly encouraging member institutions to provide more emphasis on a cohesive, comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to each individual cancer patient. A greater commitment on clinical trial accrual is also encouraged, and this is best coordinated via comprehensive cancer tumor board conferences.

The timing of this meeting in the fall allows for the latest findings in clinical cancer research from major oncology conferences to be presented and discussed. This educational activity also meets a unique need for East Tennessee to provide a group of networked and collaborating practitioners to discuss the most recent developments in oncology care in the context of local treatment approaches and patient populations.
