Position Summary

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology - Knoxville, is currently accepting applications for the Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine. This distinctive fellowship advances the practice of value-based, patient-centered, integrated and multidisciplinary patient care management during the perioperative continuum to improve healthcare performance. In partnership with The University of Tennessee Knoxville Haslam College of Business, the fellow will be concurrently enrolled in the prestigious Physicians Executive MBA (PEMBA) program to build a strong foundation of business and management skills and facilitate leadership development. The fellowship emphasizes the Perioperative Surgical Home model of care, acute pain management, and perioperative ultrasonography. In addition to receiving a Master of Business Administration, the fellow has opportunity for Basic Certification in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) and experience with the FORESIGHT (Focused periOperative Risk Evaluation Sonography Involving Gastro-abdominal, Hemodynamic, and Trans-thoracic) Point-of-Care Ultrasound Protocol.

The fellow will function as a Junior Faculty Member with a supervisory and teaching roll. The fellowship is 18 months total in duration (July of current year to December the following year). The PEMBA program itself is of one-year duration (January-December). Non-Clinical Time is built into the fellowship, both during the PEMBA program and the six months prior, to allow for clinical enrichment activities, such as perioperative ultrasonography, research, and quality improvement. The result is a dynamic curriculum with a unique blend of clinical, educational, and enrichment experiences tailored to the fellow’s personal and professional interests.

The fellowship is a non-ACGME accredited fellowship, and thus, is not bound to conventional fellowship compensation models. As such, the salary and compensation is well above competition averages. A full benefits package and eight weeks paid time off are included. There is no call, night, or weekend clinical work.

We are seeking candidates who are dedicated to professional advancement and share our mission to develop perioperative physician leaders. Transforming perioperative medicine from conventional patient assessment to comprehensive medical management is our goal and we welcome you to join us!
