Former Library Director Lynne Craver Passes Away

Lynne Craver, former Director of Preston Medical Library, recently passed away at the age of 58. Craver was instrumental in securing grants to support consumer health efforts in the Knoxville community. She is credited with opening the telephone-based consumer health information service at Preston Medical Library. View her obituary.


Symposium Features Cancer Research

A Cancer Community of Scholars Symposium featured invited speaker Donald Engelman, a Higgins Professor of Biochemistry at Yale University, presenting "Insertion of a transmembrane helix and its uses in targeting tumors." Engelman is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the National Institutes of Health, and has been a Guggenheim fellow. The Symposium was hosted by the Cancer Community of Scholars, UT Medical Center / UT Graduate School of Medicine, UTK Office of Research & Engagement, departments of Biochemistry & Cellular & Molecular Biology and Microbiology


Keith Gray Discusses Cancer in African American Community

In honor of National Minority Health Month and in partnership with the Cancer Support Community, Keith Gray, MD, Associate Professor and Chief, Surgery's Division of Surgical Oncology, delivered a presentation at the Beck Cultural Center addressing health issues in the African American community. His focus was on early detection of cancer and diabetes through screening and prevention by adopting a healthy lifestyle to include no tobacco use, eating a nutritional diet and exercising. He stated that over 25 percent of African Americans smoke; if everyone quit smoking, that number would decrease by 30 percent. Dr. Gray noted Tennessee is ranked as having the fourth highest rate of obesity in the nation. In East Tennessee, the obesity rate in African Americans is 40 percent and nearly two-thirds are overweight. He said that with a controlled diet and increase in exercise, two-thirds of all cancers could be prevented


Martha Earl Receives Tennessee Library Association Honor Award

Martha Earl, MSLS, AHIP, Assistant Director and Associate Professor, Preston Medical Library, received the Tennessee Library Association Honor Award for service to Tennessee libraries recently. The TLA Honor Award recognizes any person or group who has made a significant contribution to the furtherance of librarianship on a statewide or national level.

WBIR Features Monthly Health Information Segment

WBIR is now featuring a health information segment on the first Monday of each month during "10 News at Five" from 5-6 p.m. Kelsey Leonard, MSIS, AHIP, Assistant Professor, Health Information Services Librarian, helps answer questions and provide tips for finding reliable health information related to national monthly health topics. The segment began in April with a feature on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In May, Stroke was featured. The next segment, June 1, will discuss Men's Health Topics.
