Dr. Paul J. Hauptman, Dean of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, announced the Mitchell H Goldman Endowed Chair for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Michael Freeman, Professor of Surgery, has been named as the inaugural holder of the Endowed Chair.

Inaugural Leadership Academy Announced
The inaugural class of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Academic Leadership Academy was announced by Dean Paul Hauptman and Co-Directors Dr. Eric Carlson and Dr. Anthony Wilson. The curriculum of the Academy is designed to provide skill acquisition in several domains including teaching and precepting, research and publications, academic career advancement and leadership. These skills will allow the participants to become effective academic leaders, on campus and in state and national organizations in academic medicine.

Awards were given for Best Original Research Project to Lauren Grimsley MD; Best Quality Improvement Project to Gabriel Collins DO; and Best Case Report to Hunter Upton MD.

Cancer Institute Grant Endowment Supports Research
In 2015, The University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Cancer Institute led by John L. Bell, MD, identified the need to build an endowment to fund cancer research on the campus of the medical center and its academic partner, the UT Graduate School of Medicine. In collaboration with the Development Office and led by volunteer fundraising co-chairs, Steve and Becky South, a campaign was launched to raise at least $3 million to support promising research.
The campaign exceeded its stated goal, raising $5.5 million. The endowment has continued to grow to the point that the first grant applications were accepted and funded in early 2020.
The 2020-2021 Grant Recipients are Jillian Lloyd, MD, MPH, FACS, Department of Surgery; Larry Kilgore, MD, FACOG, FACS, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and Laurentia Nodit, MD, Pathology.

Dr. Jeffrey Peeke Named Radiology Chairman
Jeffrey Peeke, MD, has been named Chair of the Department of Radiology. He served as Interim Chair since December 2017 and has been a member of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine faculty since 2007. Dr. Peeke is an alumnus of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the UT Graduate School of Medicine. As a resident, he received the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Roentgen Resident Research Award and twice won the Howard Gould Clinical Excellence Award.

UTRF Licensee Attralus Secures $25M in Investment Funds for Advancements Related to Amyloidosis Research Led by Dr. Jonathan Wall
Jonathan Wall, PhD, and his amyloidosis research team have spent more than two decades investigating systemic amyloidosis. Their work played an integral role in helping launch the biopharmaceutical company Attralus with technology licensed from the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF).
The Foundation recently announced that Attralus has secured $25 million in investment financing to work on transformative medicines to improve the lives of patients with amyloidosis.
