K. Paige Johnson, MD Named Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) has named K. Paige Kessler Johnson, MD, as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) effective August 1, 2023. Dr. Johnson had previously been named Interim Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education on January 1, 2023.

"Prior to 2022, I knew Dr. Johnson as a valuable colleague in the clinical arena. After working with her this year, I now have a full appreciation of her amazing education skills, as well as her outstanding collaborative spirit and growth mindset. She is simply the ideal person to serve as our first Dean of UME and lead a transformation of that mission on our campus," said Dean Craft.

Dr. Johnson completed her undergraduate degree in Biology from West Virginia University and earned her medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Upon completion of her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in 2003 at the UTGSM, she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Johnson's passion for teaching led her to become the department's Clerkship Director and later to complete the esteemed Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Academic Scholars and Leaders program in 2019.  Dr. Johnson has since received two APGO Excellence in Teaching Awards as well as the UTHSC Golden Apple Award for Overall Outstanding Clerkship Director. Dr. Johnson's exemplary track record, leadership, and deep-rooted connection to the institution position her perfectly to lead and elevate the UTGSM's undergraduate medical education endeavors. Before becoming Interim Assistant Dean for UME, Dr. Johnson also served as Director of UME from 2020-2022.

"These are exciting times as we grow and diversify the medical student experience on our campus. After being with the UTGSM family for 24 years, I take great pride in this institution and will work to elevate Undergraduate Medical Education to the level set forth by the GSM," said Dr. Johnson.

The appointment of Dr. Johnson as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education marks a significant milestone in the UTGSM’s commitment to nurturing exceptional medical education and fostering the growth of aspiring physicians.
