Dean Announces New Chair of Surgery Dr. Bruce Ramshaw

Dr. Julie Jeter UTGSMDean James Neutens, PhD, announced today that Bruce Ramshaw, MD, FACS, has been named chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville. Recognized internationally for laparoscopic and advanced hernia procedures, Dr. Ramshaw also specializes in creating patient-centered care teams.

Dean Neutens said, "As healthcare continues to change nationwide, patient-centered multidisciplinary care is a priority at The University of Tennessee Medical Center."

Dr. Ramshaw's appointment will begin October 1, 2015.

Most recently, Dr. Ramshaw served as chair of the Halifax Health Medical Center General Surgery Residency Program in Daytona Beach, Florida, since 2009. In addition to being an education leader, Dr. Ramshaw has founded multiple companies in the healthcare field including Advanced Hernia Solutions and Surgical Momentum. Advanced Hernia Solutions has helped complex hernia patients from all over the world on the basis of a patient-centered care model. Surgical Momentum is a patient safety organization that was established in 2009 after Dr. Ramshaw recognized there could be vast differences in how the same hernia mesh reacted in different patients. Using Continuous Quality Improvement principles, Surgical Momentum works with medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and distributors to improve value, quality of care and patient outcomes.

Dr. Ramshaw first implemented a patient-centered care team at the University of Missouri, where from 2004-2009 he was chief of General Surgery and associate professor, and he held the John A. Growden Professorship in Surgery. He redesigned the department and saw the potential of a new healthcare model, which he used to establish Halifax Health as the first academic medical center in the country to be designed with divisions based on patient needs rather than physician specialty.

Dr. Ramshaw has also held appointments at Emory University School of Medicine as assistant professor of Surgery and director of the Hernia Institute. He is a board member and past-president of the Americas Hernia Society and member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Communications Committee and SAGES Hernia Task Force. He has been an abstract reviewer for the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons meetings, and he was a charter member of the Atlanta Surgical Association. Dr. Ramshaw has also been a board member of the ABC’s Telemedicine and Telehealth advisory board as well as board member and co-founder of Intellitrain, Inc, which specializes in the delivery of customized technology training with an emphasis on the theories of adult education.

Dr. Ramshaw has received multiple research grants for studies involving laparoscopic procedures and more. He is well-published and gives presentations and lectures throughout the world. He has performed live surgeries for local and international specialty meetings and been an editor of two books. He received his medical degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, and completed his Surgical Internship and Residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

By working with everyone here at The University of Tennessee Medical Center, as chair, Dr. Ramshaw said he plans to facilitate internal and external collaborations to help us continue to be a leader in the healthcare transition from a volume-based model to one based on value for the patient.
