AAOMS Names Dr. Eric Carlson Committee Person of the Year

Eric R. Carlson, DMD, MD, Professor and Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received the 2012 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Committee Person of the Year Award during the AAOMS 94th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition.

He was named AAOMS Committee Person of the Year in recognition of his leadership of the AAOMS Parameters of Care Committee. Under his stewardship the committee has produced two editions of clinical practice guidelines for the 11 recognized areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery scope of practice.

He has also served as the Faculty Section representative to the AAOMS Committee on Residency Education and Training and is past chair of the AAOMS Faculty Section. Dr. Carlson is the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery section editor for Surgical Oncology and Reconstruction, chair of the Residency Review Committee on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the AAOMS commissioner on the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Dr. Carlson received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his surgical residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He completed a fellowship in oral/head and neck tumor and reconstructive surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and received his medical degree from the University of Miami.

In addition to his AAOMS fellowship, Dr. Carlson holds memberships in a number of professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, Tennessee Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (of which he is a past president), the American Academy of Oral Pathology, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is a past recipient of the AAOMS Community Service Award, the William F. Harrigan Award and the Harriet Buescher Lawrence '34 Prize from Connecticut College.
