On December 31, 2019, one of the premier academicians, clinicians and campus leaders at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine retired as Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine. Gregory H. Blake MD MPH had a storied career, and Dr. Paul Hauptman, Dean, thanks him for his countless contributions to the Graduate School of Medicine; The University of Tennessee Medical Center; and to the nation as a result of his many years of military service.

Dr. Michael Freeman Named Chairman of the Department of Surgery
After a national search, Dr. Paul Hauptman, Dean, has announced that Michael Freeman MD, Professor of Surgery, has been selected to become the next Department of Surgery Chair and to lead the Department’s growth into the next decade. Dr. Freeman has served as Interim Chair since October 2018, and he has formulated bold plans for the future in clinical care, medical education and research.

UT Medical Center Honors Its Veterans
On November 11, 2019, members of The University of Tennessee Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine community honored those who have served or are serving in the military in observance of Veteran's Day. Among events throughout the day, Gregory Blake MD MPH, Professor and Chair of Family Medicine, led a special Grand Rounds activity to highlight medical innovations that have resulted from times of war. Also at the Grand Rounds, James Lewis MD, Professor and Associate Program Director of General Surgery, told his personal story of how war impacted his life and career as a physician.

Dr. Eric Carlson Announces the Kelly L. Krahwinkel Endowed Chair for OMFS
Eric Carlson DMD MD, announced the Kelly L. Krahwinkel Endowed Chair for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at a ceremony with UT Graduate School of Medicine Dean Paul J. Hauptman MD; Cancer Institute Medical Director John Bell MD; and the Krahwinkel family. This endowment creates the first endowed chair for the Graduate School of Medicine.
