Tina M. Dudney, MD Named Interim Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education & Designated Institutional Official at UTGSM

Tina M. Dudney, MD, has been named the Interim Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) effective January 1, 2023. Dr. Dudney succeeds William P. Metheny, PhD, who is retiring after a 37-year career in medical education. Dr. Metheny joined the UTGSM in 2007 after holding multiple positions at Brown University in Providence RI and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

“It has been my great fortune to collaborate with and observe the leadership of Dr. Metheny in his role as DIO, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical and Dental Education and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. I have watched as he masterfully navigated ACGME requirements while implementing and positively influencing policies to expand and advance graduate medical education,” stated Dr. Dudney. “His creativity and perseverance were particularly helpful as we worked through the challenges of ensuring the education and well-being of our learners during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been a strong support and an invaluable resource to me in my role as a Program Director.”

Dr. Dudney completed her undergraduate degree at Tennessee Technological University and received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and a PGY4 Chief Resident year at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She returned to UTMC as faculty in 2002 and developed the Pulmonary Disease fellowship as Program Director beginning in 2007, overseeing the addition of Critical Care Medicine in 2015 as well as a recent increase in fellowship complement. Dr. Dudney has been involved in scholarly activity including book chapters, journal publications and national and regional presentations throughout her career and has been involved in a variety of leadership positions within and outside of the institution. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Division Chief for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Dudney represents UTGSM on the Dean's Faculty Advisory Council and has served in leadership roles within the Physician Medical Education and Research Foundation. She participated as the physician member of the State of TN Respiratory Care Board and has been active in the region's response to the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the Crisis Standards of Care Task Force, Knox/East Tennessee Region. Dr. Dudney received the RA Obenour Jr Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014 and the RA Obenour Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018. She is Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine, with specific clinical interests that include critical illness in pregnancy, medical ethics in the ICU, and integration of medical education in the clinical learning environment.

“From medical student to Chief Resident to Program Director and Division Chief, I have watched the evolution and growth of graduate medical education on the UTGSM campus and was humbled and honored to be considered for such an impactful position given the responsibilities it entails,” said Dr. Dudney.

“The Graduate School of Medicine is very fortunate to have someone with Dr. Dudney’ s extensive clinical, graduate medical education and institutional experience take this role. I am confident that she will build on the legacy of education excellence that Dr. Metheny has established on our campus,” said Dr. Robert M. Craft, Interim Dean of the College of Medicine-Knoxville.

“My goal in assuming the role of Director of Graduate Director of Medical and Dental Education and DIO is to collaborate with Dean Craft and our clinical partner University Health System, Inc to expand upon the growth Dr. Metheny has set in place by ensuring compliance with ACGME and institutional policies, serving as an advocate for Program Directors and trainees, and promoting excellence in education and research in a diverse, nurturing, robust and innovative learning environment that continues to enhance our reputation regionally and nationally,” said Dr. Dudney.
