GSM Faculty Honored for Excellence


Each year, faculty are recognized for their extraordinary efforts in education and discovery. The 18th annual University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Faculty Awards were presented by Dr. Paul J. Hauptman, Dean. Joe Rainey, DDS, Instructor of General Dentistry, received the 2021 GSM Spirit Award.

'Women in Science' Initiative Funds UTGSM Research

With support from The University of Tennessee Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, a "Women in Science" initiative was established in 2020 to support the research projects of junior and mid-career female faculty at the UT Graduate School of Medicine. Three women have been awarded funding for 2021: C. Lindsay McKnight, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery; Jill Maples, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and Kelsey Grabeel, MSIS, AHIP, Associate Professor, Preston Medical Library.

UTGSM Initiates 'Advancing Access to Careers in Medicine Scholars Program'

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine launched a summer research program for UT Knoxville students who are historically under-represented in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and medicine. The Advancing Access to Careers in Medicine Scholars Program (AACMSP) is designed to improve students’ access to careers in medicine and/or translational sciences by exposing them to research being conducted at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. Deidra Mountain, PhD, Director of the Undergraduate Research Experience, facilitated the launch of the program.

UTGSM Launches a Pain Medicine Fellowship

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) now offers a Pain Medicine Fellowship. The new training program is ACGME-accredited and designed to qualify anesthesiologists for specialty certification in pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Funded by a collaboration between UTGSM, The University of Tennessee Medical Center, and University Anesthesiologists, the program provides one year of focused pain management with an emphasis on out-patient care.

UTGSM has also recently added fellowship programs for Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care in the Department of Family Medicine. Both have received initial accreditation and will be launched in 2022. More information on these fellowships will be available soon.

UTGSM Offers Programs for Physicians to Become Leaders in Academics

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine offers programs to its faculty members to foster their development into academic leaders in medicine. Anthony Wilson, MD, Chair of Family Medicine, has been instrumental in launching both programs: the Academic Leadership Academy, which is co-chaired by Paul Hauptman, MD, Dean, and Eric Carlson, DMD, MD, Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and the Faculty Development Seminar Series.

Medical Students Participate in GSM Research Projects Through Dr. I. Reid Collmann's Legacy Scholarship

  

Medical students participated in a focused research experience at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine through the I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Education Fund. Dr. Collmann believed that hands-on exposure to research and its impact on patient care help to build a solid foundation for careers in medicine.

UTGSM Advances the Research Program

Dean Paul Hauptman announced that the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine has launched a new five-year Strategic Plan for Research that promotes meaningful clinical and translational biomedical research in therapeutics, diagnostics, effective healthcare delivery, and quality improvement thereby helping to enhance the GSM's regional and national reputation. Dean Hauptman also announced that Jennifer Ferris MSHS, CCRC has been named Assistant Director of Research.
