Visiting Student Guidelines

Starting April 2008, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine will be using VSAS, the new Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications from students attending US LCME accredited schools.  To apply to our school, please complete a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates.  For more information on VSAS, please see www.aamc.org/vsas or contact vsas@aamc.org or (202) 478-9878.  For more information on our visiting student electives, please contact Missy Maples at mmaples@utmck.edu or (865) 305-9618.

Electives presented in this catalog are available in Knoxville to both UT Memphis students and students from other medical schools. For a visiting student to be eligible for enrollment in a Knoxville elective, the following criteria must be met:

•  Visiting students must be candidates in good standing for the M.D. degree at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

•  Visiting students are limited to a maximum of 12 weeks of experience in Knoxville during their medical school career.

•  Visiting student must be immunized against measles and rubella, completed the hepatitis vaccine series and have taken a TB skin test within the past year.

•  All visiting students must be covered by malpractice/liability insurance from their institution or from another acceptable source. Student should also have personal health insurance coverage that is in effect while the student is away from their medical school.

•  Visiting students must have been certified in CPR within the past year and have had a recent background check (at their matriculation or more recently).

•  Visiting students must have had HIPPA training.

•  Visiting students must have completed instruction in the basic physical examination and have a working knowledge of general ward procedures. All electives require that the students have had the basic Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, Surgery, and Psychiatry clerkships.

Visiting students interested in electives in Knoxville should contact the Office of Student Affairs at the address below to request a Visiting Student Application. This can be done no earlier than April of the junior year and no later than one month prior to the beginning of the rotation. Completed applications are returned to the Office of Student Affairs to be forwarded to The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Medicine for formal registration.

It is expected that your completed rotations in Knoxville will be part of the graduation requirements of your school. Accurate and timely completion of your Visiting Student Application provides this authorization and ensures that you will receive proper credit for your elective.

Students who are regularly enrolled and paying tuition at another medical school are not charged tuition at UT for elective rotations. If a change in this policy should become necessary, the school reserves the right to charge tuition at any time.
