Oscar H. Grandas, M.D.

Dr. Oscar Grandas received his MD from National University of Colombia, Bogota, Columbia, and completed a General Surgery Residency at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. and University of Tennessee Medical Center. Additionally he completed a Fellowship in Transplant Surgery at Washington Hospital Center, Washington D.C. and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, in Knoxville, TN. Currently he is an Assistant Professor and Attending Physician in the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular/Transplant Surgery at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and the Director of the Vascular Research Laboratory (VRL). Dr. Grandas provides the clinical expertise and medical relevance to facilitate translational investigation of vascular pathology.
Deidra J.H. Mountain, PhD

Dr. Deidra Mountain received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. She completed her training as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Surgery at University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Oscar Grandas. Currently she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular/Transplant Surgery and the Basic Research Scientist in the Vascular Research Laboratory. Dr. Mountain has significant experience in cellular and molecular biology research and experimental design and is proficient in a variety of laboratory techniques including but not limited to animal survival surgery, immunohistochemistry, cell and tissue culture, primer design, PCR, DNA amplification, electrophoresis, ELISA, FACS, and fluorescent microscopy. Dr. Mountain is responsible for experimental oversight and direction in the VRL.
Mitchell H. Goldman, MD

Dr. Mitchell Goldman received his MD from Harvard University, Boston, MA, and completed a General Surgery Residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, MA. Currently he serves as Chairman and Professor in the Department of Surgery, at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Goldman is the original founder of the Vascular Research Laboratory nearly 20 year ago.
Michael B. Freeman, MD

Dr. Michael Freeman received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA, and completed a General Surgery Residency at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Additionally he completed a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Currently he is Professor, Department of Surgery, and Chief, Division of Vascular/Transplant Surgery. Dr. Freeman also serves as Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program.
Stacy Kirkpatrick
Supervisor, Vascular Research Laboratory
Stacy Kirkpatrick received her BA in Biology from Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. She is the Laboratory Supervisor of the VRL at UTGSM with over 21 years of research experience. Ms. Kirkpatrick is experienced in immunohistochemistry, gel electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extraction, Southern and Northern blot and cell culture. Her animal surgery experience includes canine, porcine, rat, rabbit and mice and ranges from balloon angioplasty to laparoscopic aneurysm repair. Ms. Kirkpatrick is responsible for VRL personnel oversight and maintenance of supplies and equipment in laboratory.
Eva Bukovska, MS
Research Associate
Eva Bukovska received her MS in Microbiology from the Institute for Postgraduate Education of Medical Technicians in Brno, Czech Republic. She is a Senior Laboratory Technician in the VRL at UTGSM. She is experienced in Western blot and In-gel zymography electrophoresis, cell proliferation assays, ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry.
Wendy Packan
Senior Laboratory Technician
Wendy Packan received her BS in Botany with a minor in Biology from the University of Tennessee. She is a Senior Laboratory Technician in the VRL at UTGSM. Ms. Packan has extensive experience in animal handling and husbandry and is primarily responsible for animal monitoring and care.
