Opportunites for Students
Undergraduate, Graduate, and Post-Doctoral Education
Graduate and post-doctoral education is an important element of the foundation for the Division of Surgical Research. The Division of Surgical Research serves to address important biomedical research issues that hinge on information generated by modern biology.
Surgical investigators must not only be grounded in principles and techniques of surgery but must also have training and experience in as many related disciplines of modern biology to have the background and confidence to work on multidisciplinary problems in the new millennium.
While emphasizing graduate and post-doctoral education, we also seek to involve our best undergraduates and medical students in research programs that will stimulate their continuing interest in post-graduate education. Surgical residents may elect to spend a one year research rotation in one our research laboratories working with established surgical faculty investigators.
Fellowships
The Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship and the Vascular Fellowship based in the Department of Surgery provide ample research opportunities in the laboratory for individuals seeking careers in academic surgery. Besides basic science research training in the laboratory, all residents and fellows are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to formally participate in several other research endeavors of the Department of Surgery. These include pharmaceutical and NIH sponsored clinical trials, investigator initiated clinical trials, and outcome, epidemiologic and health services research projects.
Comparative and Experimental Medicine Graduate Degree Program
The existing graduate degree programs at the University of Tennessee and the Comparative and Experimental Medicine Graduate Degree Program jointly administered by the Graduate School of Medicine and the UT College of Veterinary Medicine provides a conduit for graduate students to conduct research in the Division of Surgical Research.
Work Study Prorgram
Credit hours are available for Undergraduate students who wish to work in the Division of Surgical Research laboratory. Gain valuable hands-on experience by working with the department's research projects. Please contact the Director of the Division of Surgical Research, Michael D. Karlstad, Ph.D. for more information.
