The Frances K. Patterson Resident Award
Obituary

Frances K. Patterson MDPATTERSON, FRANCES K., MD — age 67, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, January 26th after a courageous 11 year battle with cancer. Dr. Patterson was born in 1937 to Max Klinman and Mildred Labiner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Upper Darby, PA. In 1962 she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania (later known as Temple University).

For the past 36 years, Patterson served as a Pathologist at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital and on the faculty of the residency program. She will be remembered at the Department of Pathology's Annual Resident Research Day with the presentation of the Frances K. Patterson, MD Resident Award. She was instrumental in the founding of the Nuclear Medicine Department, the Nuclear Medicine Training Program and in the accreditation of the Pathology Residency Program. Among her awards is the Frank R. Blood Award for Research in Toxicology. Patterson was also an active competitive bridge player and attained the ranking of Silver Life Master. She enjoyed listening to classical music, reading mystery novels and gardening. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Max and Mildred Klinman; and her first husband (divorced), Malcolm R. Patterson of Knoxville, TN.

She is survived by: her loving husband, Dr. Paul W. Wigler of Knoxville, TN; her brother, Mickey Klinman of Marlton, NJ; her daughters, Anne Sprague of Raleigh, NC and
Carole Patterson of Eugene, OR. A memorial service in her honor will be held on Friday, February 11, 2005 at 10:00 am at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital's Wood Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that memorial gifts be made to the Frances K. Patterson Fund, UT Medical Center, care of Development Office, 1924 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.
