Pathology Residency Training Program
Conferences
One of the essential roles of a pathologist is teaching. Consequently, pathologists and pathology residents are involved in a large number of intradepartmental and interdepartmental conferences. Conferences may be somewhat artificially divided into teaching conferences and working conferences, however, essentially all of the conferences are a combination of both teaching and working. A working conference is defined as a conference in which information presented will effect primary treatment and prognosis. At teaching conferences, the pathology resident usually presents in a more didactic fashion.
It is the opinion of this department that attendance at conferences is beneficial to the pathology resident. Important clinical historical information is often presented at these conferences; information regarding treatment and the consequences of our diagnoses is routinely given at these conferences. The conferences also offer opportunities for networking.
In general, all residents should try to attend all conferences. However, the department realizes that involvement in other rotations and patient care issues may interfere with attendance. For residents in Anatomic Pathology (AP), the following conferences are mandatory. Residents on Clinical Pathology (CP) rotations are not required to attend the AP conferences, but are encouraged to do so if time permits.
- Urology
- Gastrointestinal
- Anatomic Pathology Slide
- Head and Neck
- Neuropathology

For the resident on an Anatomic Pathology (AP) rotation, there are exceptions which may excuse your absence from the required conferences. These include:
- Performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA)
- Performing a frozen section
- Involvement with an outside rotation
- Involvement in an autopsy
Please note: It is expected that any other scheduling conflicts which prevents a resident from attending these conferences, should be discussed in advance with the chief resident.
Each resident/ fellow is required at least 80% of conferences considered mandatory. A low attendance will be cause for concern. Conference attendance will become part of your review with the program director.
Failure to attend at least 80% of the conferences may result in serious consequences including the possibility of having to repeat a rotation or dismissal from the program.
