Curriculum
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency is a 48-month program. Thirty-five months are spent on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, with 13 months spent on off-service rotations. These off-service rotations include the following:
- Internal Medicine - 2 months
- Elective Medicine - 1 month
- Anesthesiology - 5 months
- Intensive Care - 1 month
- General Surgery - 4 months
The sequence and timing of off-service rotations is determined according to resident and service needs. In general, second year residents will complete the Internal Medicine, Elective Medicine, and Anesthesiology rotations, while the third year resident will complete the Intensive Care and General Surgery rotations. The Chief residency year occurs during the fourth year of the program, and involves general coordination and supervision of all clinical and didactic activities. The busy clinical activities of the Department are supported by a well-defined didactic program.
An optional MD program exists at the conclusion of the four-year residency. This program is two years in duration, leading to the MD degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis.
