Clanton wins CEM Research Symposium Award

Colin Clanton, M.D.Colin Clanton, M.D., Chief Resident, Anesthesiology, won the Award of Excellence in the intern/resident category at the second annual Comparative and Experimental Medicine Research Symposium June 17 on UT campus. 

The symposium was in a meeting format with 10-minute presentations, the most difficult length of formal scientific presentations. Dr. Clanton participated in a presentation titled, “Absolute Clot Strength of Multi-Trauma Patients Increases During Transit to the Emergency Department.”

The Graduate School of Medicine co-sponsored the symposium with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station and UT Knoxville Office of Research.

 

Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology faculty, staff and residents attended a banquet Friday, June 20, to honor excellence in teaching and its graduating residents.

“Our program holds our resident physicians to an extremely high level of academic excellence from day one,” said Jerry Epps, M.D., Anesthesiology Chairman and Residency Program Director.

General Dentistry

General Dentistry held an end-of-the-year banquet Sunday, June 29.  O. Lee Wilson, M.D., Division Program Director, recognized the graduating residents, faculty and volunteer faculty for their dedication to the program and an outstanding year.

During 2008-2009, Jonathan Bradshaw, M.D., will be acting chief resident for his second year of residency.

 

Family Medicine

Family Medicine held its annual Resident Graduation and Faculty Recognition Dinner Friday, June 27.

Among the residents' many accomplishments, Todd Montgomery, M.D., and Meredith Hale, M.D., went on mission trips to Africa, Nigeria and Ghana in May and June to provide medical care to those communities.  Also, Meredith Hale, M.D., and Ben England, M.D., were appointed as the new co-chiefs for the 2008-2009 resident year.

Department of Medicine

The Freeman Rawson award, given in memory of long-time Medicine faculty member, Freeman Rawson, M.D., was presented on May 15 to Matthew Wade, M.D., third-year Internal Medicine resident, and Jennifer Headrick, M.D., second-year Internal Medicine resident.  This award is given annually to two upper-level residents who embody the spirit of teaching and possess excellent clinical skills.

Dr. Rawson, who passed away in 2003, was a founding member of the Knoxville Cardiovascular Group and practiced medicine in Knoxville for 47 years.  Dr. Rawson was known for his compassion and clinical skills.

The Department of Medicine traditionally recognizes faculty members at an annual banquet in December.

 

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Radiology

Radiology held its annual awards banquet to honor graduating seniors and recognize faculty and residents June 6.

“In June of this year, six residents completed their radiology training.  Four will enter advanced fellowship training programs, and two will enter private practice,” Kathy Hudson, M.D., Residency Program Director, said. “This group of residents was exceptional and has set a very high standard for performance.  They were excellent teachers and role models for lower-level residents.  They will be great ambassadors for our department and the institution.”

Dr. Hudson also noted that the six graduating residents also successfully passed the American Board of Radiology Exam in June.

Surgery

Surgery held its 16th Annual Residents’ Research Day June 21 with Kimball I. Maull Lecturer Grace Rozycki, M.D., Professor and Chief, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine and former UT Graduate School of Medicine General Surgery resident.

The 24th Annual Chief Residents’ Dinner followed that evening to honor graduating residents.

Dr. Mitchell Goldman, M.D., Professor and Chair, said, “Our graduating residents epitomize our departmental mission in that they will provide the highest quality patient care, teaching and research.”

Message from the Dean

It takes everyone here at the Graduate School of Medicine to make our institution successful.  I appreciate the fact that we all strive to raDean James J. Neutensise the quality of our educational programs, hold high scholarly activity, and generously give of self in service to others.  Our faculty and staff have asked that we recognize those who have excelled during this past year, and I applaud those who have earned this great status from their peers. 

My sincere thanks go to the recipients of the 2008 Faculty Teaching and Research Awards and the Employee Excellence Awards.  Your dedication to education as the foundation of everything we do, to the desire to reach beyond current limits in research, to the best possible care for your patients, to the highest standards of customer service and service to the community spotlight you as the leaders you are. 

Many of you have positively influenced the residents and fellows who will be graduating this month.  Congratulations to these fine graduates.  As you move into your careers or into further training, we know you will represent the UT Graduate School of Medicine well.  We look forward to communicating with you, to keep you informed of the successes of your alma mater.

This past year has been one a new beginnings.  We’ve seen and spurred many changes in the Graduate School, but one thing remained constant:  The continuing drive of our employees to improve our institution.  Read on to see evidence of our employees’ dedication and our passion for education, research, patient care and service.

 “Considering we have people who deal with patient care, direct teaching and so many other things here, it does mean a lot to even be considered for the award,” he said.

excellence in leadershipGuider was chosen for the award notably for her implementation of the Graduate School of Medicine Coordinators’ Roundtable, a forum for coordinators from all departments to share ideas.

In receiving the award, Guider said, “I feel very special to have been selected. Being nominated for the award would be compliment enough; to actually be chosen is an honor indeed.”

Dean James Neutens said of the winners and all who were nominated, “These employees represent outstanding commitment and dedication to the Graduate School of Medicine. We appreciate their leadership and extend congratulations to all.”

Educators Honored with Faculty and Research Awards

The fifth annual Graduate School of Medicine Faculty and Research Awards were presented by James Neutens, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School of Medicine, to the following recipients during the Residents' and Fellows' Reception and Faculty Awards held June 25 at the UT Visitors’ Center. Winners are nominated by department chairs.

Spirit of the Graduate School of Medicine Award
Alfred Beasley, M.D.
Director, Graduate Medical and Dental Education

beasley spirit awardThe Spirit of the Graduate School of Medicine Award is given in recognition of outstanding leadership and innovation that upholds and promotes the Graduate School mission.

“Dr. Beasley embodies the Spirit of the Graduate School of Medicine as evidenced by his untiring dedication to education, service and research on our behalf,” Dr. Neutens said in recognizing Dr. Beasley. “Dr. Beasley led the Graduate School as a faculty member, a department chair, director of Graduate Medical and Dental Education, and most importantly as a mentor to our residents and junior faculty.”

“Dr. Gerard has provided both excellent leadership and mentoring,” said Eric Carlson, D.M.D., M.D., in nominating Dr. Gerard.

Oscar H. Grandas, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Surgery

grandas clinical research awardThis award recognizes outstanding investigators and promotes excellence in clinical research.  Dr. Grandas’s research in hormone replacement therapy has resulted in significant translational research.

In nominating Dr. Grandas, Mitchell Goldman, M.D., said, “His interests transcend vascular and transplant surgery and his contributions to clinical literature highlight these interests.”

Assistant Professor and Transitional Year Residency Program Director, Department of Medicine

norwood teaching awardDr. Norwood received the Excellence in Teaching Award for her strong commitment to teaching while serving as a role model to residents, students and colleagues.  Notably, Dr. Norwood initiated a two-week course for PGY-1 and PGY-2 students that allows residents time away from patients to focus on research and articles.

“I cannot reiterate enough positive comments about Dr. Daphne Norwood, her dedication to teaching, her enthusiasm, and the respect she has earned from the residents,” said Timothy Panella, M.D.

“Dr. Fields has been committed to the training of surgical residents in the Graduate School of Medicine and has enhanced the education program of the department immeasurably,” Mitchell Goldman, M.D., said in nominating Dr. Fields.
