Awards and Accomplishments

Double Exposure for UTGSM Researchers
Drs. Solomon and WallResearch scientists, Alan Solomon, MD, Professor, and Jonathan S. Wall, PhD, Associate Professor, Human Immunology and Cancer Research Program, have found themselves "double exposed." The UTGSM Researchers have had images produced by their laboratories published on the cover of two major scientific journals.

The journal, Arthritis and Rheumatism (Volume 54, Issue 11, November 2006) has an image from Dr. Solomon's paper published in the same issue entitled, "Amyloid contained in the knee joint meniscus is formed from apolipoprotein A-I." Dr. Wall's image is on the cover of Journal of Nuclear Medicine (Volume 47, Issue 12, December 2006) and includes his paper, "Radioimaging of Light Chain Amyloid with a Fibril-Reactive Monoclonal Antibody."

Dr. Solomon, who has been conducting research here at UTGSM for over 40 years, says that he can not recall when one institution has had two cover images in major impact journals published within a month of one another. "It is quite unusual," Dr. Solomon said.
Dr. James Neutens, Interim Dean UTGSM, said, "It is an outstanding accomplishment and illustrates the quality of the research currently being performed at UTGSM."

Department of Medicine Faculty Recognized At Reception
The Department of Medicine held its annual faculty awards reception at the Orangery Restaurant on December 11, 2006.

Forty Years of Service Award:
Two long standing faculty members, Richard A. Obenour, MD and Alfred D. Beasley, MD were recognized with a 40 Years of Service Award. Dr. Obenour has been an active faculty member since 1962, and Dr. Beasley joined the department in 1967. The award was the department’s way of saying “Thank You” for their meritorious service and dedication in teaching, representing 80 plus years of service.

Drs. Obenour and Beasley

 Frank London Award:
Dr. MartinolichSince the early 1980’s, the Department of Medicine has had a yearly tradition of recognizing one teacher who deserves the accolade “excellent.” The medicine residents vote for their choice of this deserving faculty member. The 2006 London Award was presented to Kevin M. Martinolich, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor. Dr. Martinolich has been a faculty member since 2000. The London Award is named in memory of the late Frank London, MD. Dr. London was the founding member of the Knoxville Cardiovascular Group and Professor in the Department of Medicine where he served as Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. London is remembered by his students as a faculty member who was accessible, dedicated, and thoughtfully knowledgeable with regard to treating the disease and the patient.

Richard A. Obenour Jr. Award:
Rolland Regester, MDThe Richard A. Obenour, Jr. Award is presented annually to a deserving faculty member for their steadfast commitment to education and teaching. The 2006 recipient of this award was Rolland Regester, MD, Associate Professor, Division of Nephrology. Dr. Regester, who recently retired from clinical practice, has been an active faculty member in the Department of Medicine since 1973. The Richard A. Obenour, Jr. Award was established after the untimely death of the son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard A. Obenour. The Obenour family, friends, and coworkers generously donated to an endowment fund in their son’s memory.  Since young Dick spent most of his life pursuing an education, Dr. Obenour thought it fitting to create an award dedicated to a faculty member who displayed a commitment to education through teaching residents and medical students.

Residents in the News

Christiano Certified in Surgical Critical Care
Jose G. Christiano, MDJose G. Christiano, MD, 4th Year Surgery Resident, recently passed the Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Certifying Examination. The exam is a computer-based examination offered annually by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The examination consists of multiple-choice questions designed to assess the applicant's cognitive knowledge and clinical judgment. The examination is a one-day exam, lasting five hours and is held at computer-testing facilities across the United States. Applicants who complete an ACGME-accredited surgical critical care or anesthesiology critical care fellowship after completion of three years of surgery residency may apply for SCC certification and take the examination while still in residency. Dr. Christiano completed his training in 2005 as a fellow in the Department of Surgery’s Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship at UTGSM.

Dr. Christiano was selected by Department of Surgery Faculty as the recipient of the Frame Scholarship. The Frame Scholarship recognizes the resident who provides exemplary patient care. The Frame Scholarship is named in honor of Scott B. Frame, MD, former Department to Surgery faculty member. As recipient of the scholarship, Dr. Christiano attended the 20th Annual Scientific Assembly of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) in Sanibel, Florida.

Radiology Residents Recognized for ABR Exam Performance
Kathleen B. Hudson, MD, Program Director, Radiology Residency Program, has several reasons to be excited for the Residents in the Department of Radiology. “Six second and third year radiology residents recently took the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Physics Examination. In physics, the UTGSM residents scored high enough to be ranked 44 out of 203 programs in the USA and Canada,” said Dr. Hudson. “Eight third and fourth year residents took the written clinical portion of the ABR exam and the scores were exceptionally high. For the written clinical radiology exam the ranking was a superb 13 out of 203 programs. We are very proud of our residents and our faculty.” Dr. Hudson continued.

Congratulations to our Radiology Residents and their faculty members!

15th Anniversary UT Graduate School of Medicine
Happy 15th Anniversary, UTGSM
In celebration of the founding of the University of Tennessee Graduate School (UTGSM) 15 years ago and the 50th anniversary of UT Medical Center (UTMC), please enjoy these historical tidbits.

A Glance Back in Time: The 1960s
In 1964, Dr. Amoz Chernoff is named new director of the University of Tennessee Memorial Research Center, and the next year, the research facilities undergo a $1 million expansion. National and international headlines follow, as researchers study birth defects, blood disorders and cancer. The center is one of the few in the nation to test L-Dopa, a new drug used to control Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

The 1970s—and big changes—are next…

Beyond the Scope
Daley Volunteers Services to Partners in Health
HatiBrian J. Daley, MD, Professor, Department of Surgery, was the guest of the Zanmi Lasante Organization in the cities of Cange and Boucan Carre, Haiti in October 2006. Zanmi Lasante means Partners in Health (PIH) in Haitian Kreyol and is the flagship project of the PIH. (Read more about the Partners in Health Organization.)

Dr. Daley performed over 28 operations ranging from inguinal hernias to abdominal hysterectomies. The organization benefits the economically underprivileged and medically underserved people of the Central Plateau Region of Haiti. According to the PIH web site, the island nation of Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. Nationwide, Haiti’s per capita income falls well below a dollar a day, at about $240 annually.

Office Research Integrity Hosts Mock News Investigation
Conference
Dr. Meredith Gray sat in the “hot seat” Friday, February 23, 2007, answering questions about her role in a (fictional) clinical trial. Dr. Gray (played by Tina Dudney, MD, Department of Medicine) was called to account for her actions in a conference based upon a “mock investigational news expose” of a clinical trial gone awry.

The crack news team from “59 minutes” led by Interim Dean James Neutens, PhD, as anchor, also interviewed the “aggrieved widow” (played by UT Medical Center Chaplain Sheryl Wurl), her attorney (played by 3rd year Family Medicine resident Darin Hale) and the research nurse coordinator (played by Misty Long, PET/CT technologist).

The taped interviews were combined with panel discussions in the 4th Annual Research Ethics conference “59 Minutes Investigates: Clinical Trials on the Hot Seat” as a way of illustrating some of the ethical, legal and regulatory issues in clinical trials.

Local physician/investigators, members of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and research staff who served panel members in the morning conference included Moderator Gary Smith, MD, Rev. Sheryl Wurl, Tina Dudney, MD, Lorraine Wallace, PhD, Amy Keenum, DO, Misty Long, Daphne Norwood, MD, and Sherry Brewer, JD.

The audience of over 100 included residents, faculty, administrators, researchers, staff and members of the IRB joined with the panel in discussing issues such as conflicts of interest in research, therapeutic misconception, informed consent readability, compensation for conducting and participating in clinical trials, billing issues, randomization and many other topics.

The conference was sponsored by GSM’s Office of Research Integrity.

New Procedures in Place for GSM Help Desk Beginning February 1, 2007, the Graduate School of Medicine began processing Help Desk calls for all GSM employees. GSM employees should no longer contact the UHS Help Desk for computer related support issues.
