Medical Explorations Program Continues
Dr. Mitchell Goldman and Medical Explorations Program StudentsIn 1991, Dr. Mitchell Goldman, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, began a program for high school students who were interested in learning more about careers in the medical field. The program, officially named "Medical Explorations", is still going strong. Medical Explorations is offered to high school juniors and seniors, as well as college students. The six week program consists of one week rotations in various departments of the hospital. A typical schedule might include a week's rotation in Anesthesia, Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Ob/Gyn.

Dr. I. Reid CollmannThrough a generous grant from the I. Reid Collmann Foundation, students who qualify receive a stipend to assist with financial obligations. Dr. I. Reid Collmann, who passed away in 2002, was appointed Associate Dean of the Knoxville Unit, UT College of Medicine and Director of Medical Affairs at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital in 1984. In July 1991, he was appointed Acting Dean of the newly formed Graduate School of Medicine until his retirement in October 1995.

Quotes from former Medical Explorers include:

"The trauma call with my mentor was one of the best experiences of my life."

"It was interesting to see how the scans are read and what the radiologists looked for in them."

"I loved the hematology/oncology rotation and
my mentor was very welcoming and a great teacher, but what I liked most was how they
treated their patients."
