Dr. Alan Solomon Is 'Health Care Hero'
The Greater Knoxville Business Journal selected Alan Solomon, MD, Professor of Medicine and Program Director, Human Immunology and Cancer Program, as one of its 2011 Health Care Heroes, an annual celebration of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the quality and availability of medical care in East Tennessee.
Study by Dr. Zite on Sterilization Consent Form Literacy Garners Attention
A study by Nikki Zite, MD, Associate Professor and Residency Program Director in Obstetrics and Gynecology, on the comprehension of women using TennCare who sign the consent form for tubal sterilization shows the form is written at a reading level too difficult for most patients to understand. As a result, TennCare staff have asked for a copy of Dr. Zite's modified consent form to see if it can be utilized to help women better understand the guidelines and procedure.

Medical Explorations: Transforming High School Students for Twenty Years
Medical Explorations celebrated its 20-year anniversary this year. Among the attendees at the celebration were Mitchell Goldman, MD, Chairman of Surgery, who created the program, and Brooks Davis Hagee, MD, Dr. Goldman's former mentee who inspired the idea for Medical Explorations. Students Gain Research Experience through Dr. Collmann's Legacy Program
Undergraduate and medical students gained summer research experience through the I. Reid Collmann, M.D. Medical Student Educational Endowment, working in UT Graduate School of Medicine laboratories to gain bench research experience. Participating were Caroline Conley, Nolan Irish, Jerrin Nabers, and Wissam Tobea.
Donna Doyle Writes Poetry for Healing, Publishes in JAMA
The Journal of the American Medical Association recently featured three poems written by Donna Doyle, Consumer and Patient Health Information Specialist and Evening Supervisor in Preston Medical Library, including "The Kiss," "Intensive Care" and "Storm Damage."
Dr. Bell Presides as President for National Consortium of Breast Centers
John Bell, MD, Professor, Surgery, was elected president of the National Consortium of Breast Centers for 2011-2013. For the past year, he served as program chair of the group's 21st Annual National Interdisciplinary Breast Centers Conference, which was held in March 2011 and attracted more than 1,000 professionals in Las Vegas.
Dr. Scott Stevens Appointed to Board of Society for Vascular Surgery
Scott Stevens, MD, Professor, Surgery, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Society of Vascular Surgery. He was selected as the Southern Association for Vascluar Surgery representative to the national society in 2010 and now represents the regional organization on the Board.
Dr. Edward Kim Joins Fertility and Sterility Editorial Board
Edward Kim, MD, Professor, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Fertility and Sterility, a journal dedicated to problems of infertility and human reproductive disorders. He is currently the Chief Editor of E-medicine Urology and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Andrology and Advances in Urology.
GSM Physicians Considered Top Doctors in the U.S.
Three faculty-physicians from the UT Graduate School of Medicine were listed in U.S. News Media Group's 2011 list of "Top Doctors." Included were Edward Kim, MD, Professor, Urology; William Reid, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery; and W. Bedford Waters, MD, Professor, Urology.
UTHSC's Quit Forever App Proves Advantageous
Since the University of Tennessee Medical Center became a smoke-free campus January 1, Graduate School of Medicine and hospital staff are using tobacco cessation aids, including a new Quit Forever app developed by the UT Health Science Center, to become smoke free. Preclinical Imaging Team Succeeds at International Imaging Congress
Researchers in the Preclinical Diagnostic and Molecular Imaging Research Laboratory won two Image of the Year Awards at the Siemens Workshop at the World Molecular Imaging Congress in September. Also, a poster presented by Emily Martin was chosen for competition in the PET/SPECT Probes category.
Faculty Present 'Research at UTGSM/UTMC'
The Office of the Assistant Dean for Research held a "Research at UTGSM/UTMC" session, facilitated by Mitchell Goldman, MD, Assistant Dean for Research, to give Graduate School of Medicine faculty an opportunity to present current studies. Primary investigators were each given six minutes to update UT Medical Center and Graduate School of Medicine physicians and staff on their research.

The economic impact of the University of Tennessee Medical Center and the Graduate School of Medicine reaches East Tennessee through jobs, physicians who train here and then practice in the region, government revenues, and medical research. These findings were published in the Summer 2011 issue of Frontiers.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Pennell Painter Passes Away
Professor Emeritus of Pathology Pennell Churchman Painter, III, PhD, Pathology faculty member for almost 30 years, recently passed away. In addition to his teaching, he is remembered for his oversight of many of the clinical laboratories at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
