Emeritus Professor White Receives Dietetic Association's Highest Award
Graduate School of Medicine registered dietitian Jane V. White, PhD, has been named the 2009 recipient of the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award, the American Dietetic Association's highest honor.
Medicine Residents Represent GSM Excellence at Regional ACP
Internal Medicine residents attended the American College of Physicians 2009 Tennessee Chapter Scientific Meeting where they made a strong showing in the "Medical Jeopardy" trivia competition, and Christie Carringer, MD, placed second in the poster competition. Jeremiah Bivins, MD, R. Brad Bauer, DO, and Susan Paul, MD, also presented posters.
M. Long Takes Expertise of Siemens's New PET/CT Scanner to Hong Kong
Misty Long, research technologist for the Molecular Imaging and Translational Research Program, was invited by Siemens to assist with applications training on the first Siemens Biograph mCT scanner to be installed in the Asia Pacific Region at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. The first mCT scanner installed worldwide was at the UT Graduate School of Medicine a year ago.

Mark Rasnake, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Residency Program Director, resolved popular misconceptions about pandemic and seasonal influenza strains and provided insight to flu vaccinations to students, faculty and members of the Knoxville community as the University of Tennessee Science Forum lecturer Oct. 2 on the UT, Knoxville campus.

Dieter Family Shares Interest in Peripheral Arterial Disease
Raymond A. Dieter, III, MD, Associate Professor, Surgery, has more in common with his father and brother than told by their name. Dr. Dieter, along with his father, Raymond A. Dieter, Jr., MD, President, Center for Surgery, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and brother, Robert S. Dieter, MD, Assistant Professor, Medicine and Cardiology, Loyola University Health System, Maywood, Ill., share a common interest in peripheral arterial disease; so much so that they edited a book, "Peripheral Arterial Disease," published April 2009.
Arrival of the Siemens Inveon: A One-Ton Step to Extraordinary Research
The Preclinical and Diagnostic Molecular Imaging Laboratory took one small, one-ton step to progress research and education when it received a special delivery from Siemens. After more than nine months of anticipation, the Inveon, a state-of-the-art triple modality imaging machine that delivers PET, SPECT and CT imaging capabilities in a single system, is up and running.

Dr. Hershel Wall Recognized for His Leadership as UTHSC Chancellor
Hershel P. Wall, MD, acting chancellor of the UT Health Science Center since April 2007, stepped down from his position Sept. 30. Dr. Wall will continue to teach in the College of Medicine and serve UTHSC as Special Assistant to the President in support of Alumni Affairs and Development. Dr. Wall has been a member of the Health Science Center team since he began medical school on the Memphis campus more than 52 years ago. Steve J. Schwab, MD, was named UTHSC Interim Chancellor by UT Interim President Jan Simek.

Torch Success Unites Employees, Ignites Programs
The 2009 Torch Campaign Employees Care program successfully blazed past its goal of $212,000 this year, raising $240,600 from employees to benefit patient care, research and education at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine. With a goal of $1 million in five years, the campaign has raised more than $875,000, including multiple-year gifts. The Torch Campaign initiated "greener" ways to give this year with its first ever online campaign, which more than half of participants used to turn in pledges cards.

Resident physicians and dentists have the opportunity to gain essential business skills. Resident Business Course Lite: Aligning Yourself with the Right Business Professionals will kick off Nov. 19, noon to 1 p.m., Wood Auditorium, with keynote speaker Steve Ross, DPH, Senior Vice President, Strategic Development, University Health Systems, Inc (UHS).
