Surgery Residents Simulate Breast Tissue Biopsies
Medical Simulation CenterUsing an orange, chicken, olives and paint balls, John L. Bell, MD, FACS, Professor, Surgery's Division of Surgical Oncology, uses resources in the Medical Simulation Center to train surgery residents on techniques which evaluate solid and fluid-filled masses. The laboratory models are prepared by Judy Roark, CST, Coordinator and Skills Coach, to simulate life-like scenarios.

Dr. LeBlanc Exemplifies Translational Research

Working in the evolving field of comparative oncology, this is the level of translational research Amy LeBlanc, DVM, Director of Translational Research and Assistant Professor, is able to achieve through the unique collaborations and resources available only at the UT Graduate School of Medicine.

Dr. Pirkle Takes First Place in National Radiology Resident Poster Competition
Jacob Pirkle, MD, PharmDJacob Pirkle, MD, PharmD, Radiology Resident, received first place for the Education Exhibit Trainee Award at the Association of University Radiologists 58th Annual Meeting for his research on fluoroscopy. Residents Christine Ormsby, MD, and David Rossow, MD, also presented.

Urology Residents Present Award-Winning Research
GSM Urology ResidentsAll residents from the Division of Urologic Surgery were selected to present at the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association annual meeting. The department brought home second prize at the T. Leon Howard Pyelogram Conference, a competition highlighting unique cases seen throughout the region over the last year.

CityView Names 'The Best Docs in Knoxville'
CityView 2010 Top DocsThe eighth annual "Top Docs" issue of CityView Magazine hit newsstands in March. The physicians named are considered to be the area's most referred specialists as recognized by their peers. The UT Graduate School of Medicine congratulates the following physicians, named "The Best Docs in Knoxville."

UTGSM Match DayA nationwide Match Day was held March 18 to announce the results of residency program selection to senior medical students. The UT Graduate School of Medicine welcomes the following, who will begin residency and fellowship here July 1.

UT Genetics Center Promotes Services at UTK Health Fair
UT Genetics Center at Health FairInformation on pharmacogenetics, new clinical information on sickle cell disease, and carrier testing for hemoglobinopathies were made available by the UT Genetics Center to the UT community at a health fair held on the Knoxville campus March 31.

Dialysis Clinic Inc. Enhances Preston Medical Library's New Location
Preston Medical Library and DCIDialysis Clinic Inc. recently continued its commitment to the UT Graduate School of Medicine Preston Medical Library by making a gift of $50,000. Since 1995, DCI has donated $175,000 to support the purchase of nephrology-related materials for teaching, research and patient care.

Leading Academic Surgery Society Selects Dr. Daley
Brian Daley, MDBrian J. Daley, MD, MBA, FACS, FCCP, CNSC, Professor, Surgery's Division of Trauma/Critical Care, has been elected to the Society for University Surgeons, the leading society in academic surgery. Dr. Daley will be inducted in February 2011 at the Academic Surgical Congress.

Dr. Kilgore Guides OB/GYN Academia and Patient Care
Larry Kilgore, MDLarry Kilgore, MD, Professor and Chief of Obstetric and Gynecology's Division of Gynecologic Oncology, is a board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Also, Dr. Kilgore recently completed a three-year commitment as Council Member for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Eric Heidel Receives Outstanding Student Award for Research
Eric HeidelFaculty in the University of Tennessee Counselor Education Doctoral Program named Eric Heidel, GSM Statistical Consultant in the Office of Medical Education, Research and Development, an Outstanding Student in the area of research.

State Legislation Delivers Good News for Graduate Medical Education
James J. Neutens, PhDJames J. Neutens, PhD, FASHA, explains legislation recently passed by the Tennessee House of Representatives that will allow hospitals to pay a coverage fee to provide needed funding to the TennCare budget. Dr. Neutens notes that passage of this legislation, already in use in 26 other states, is a step in the right direction to preserve Graduate Medical Education in the State of Tennessee.

Spring Frontiers Magazine Highlights Brain and Spine
Spring 2010 Frontiers magazineWhether it's surgery on the spine, research in areas of degenerative diseases, or diagnosing and treating the causes of dizziness and headaches, medical advancements in caring for the brain and spine are diverse. The Spring 2010 issue of Frontiers magazine highlights these advancements and gives hope for the many people who suffer from conditions involving the brain or spine.

Monthly Brown Bag Research Series Begins May 14
The Office of Medical Education, Research and Development is launching a monthly brown-bag research series Friday, May 14, at noon in the Preston Medical Library Conference Room for faculty, staff, fellows and residents. The first session will be "Writing for Peer-Reviewed Publication." Everyone is welcome to attend.

Research Days May 26 and June 2
Research DayThe UT Graduate School of Medicine Academy of Scholars invites faculty, staff, fellows, residents and medical students to attend the second annual Resident Research Day Wednesday, May 26, and the inaugural Fellow Research Day Wednesday, June 2. Both events will be held in the College of Pharmacy third-floor auditorium at 7 a.m.
