James Neutens, PhDReflections on UTGSM Success in 2010

The New Year provides us an opportunity to reflect on 2010. The pieces in this month's issue show our faculty, residents and staff sharing their expertise around the world from high schools and colleges to Guatemalan villages. GSM scholarly activities pay tribute to the basic sciences with Dr. Alan Solomon and Dr. Scott Stevens and Susan Rawn on the clinical trial side of research. One of our surgical residents, Dr. Sagar Ghandi, presented at a prestigious meeting in Australia while Dr.George Sneed, a resident in Pathology, received the resident research symposium award at the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Rounding out the tripartite I ask that we applaud the Programs that have earned maximum accreditation. As several of you know this is no small feat! Education is the thread woven throughout all our efforts and as such has brought us to the point where we are exploring the opportunity to bring the first two years of medical school to this campus. The students (Lindsay Luttrell and Eric Tiner) on our task force share their views in this issue. I want to thank all of you for making the GSM so successful in 2010. We are making great progress in going from good to great.
