Dean's Message: Budget Reduction Update

James J. Neutens
James J. Neutens, PhD

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have contributed to this edition of The Scope with its new look. The Scope is now in its sixth year providing news and updates for all of us. This electronic communiqué in conjunction with the print edition of Frontiers provides news and events to a wide variety of people in and outside of Tennessee. Thanks again for a job well done!

I would imagine the principal news item on our minds today is the economy and, in particular, the status of the Graduate School of Medicine. As you know, our state-appropriated dollars will shrink significantly as of July 1, 2009. The Dean's Office is working with each of our Departmental Chairs as well as support office Directors to prepare for this change with as little impact on our mission as possible. As the State of Tennessee winds its way through upcoming months we know that a request for further reductions can be made.

While the process is difficult at times, you should know we are fortunate to have Chairs and support office Directors who not only provide superb leadership but operate in a very collegial fashion to meet the demands facing the Graduate School of Medicine. There is no doubt this attitude and cooperation will allow us to prevail during these difficult times.
