From the Dean's Office Dean's Message: Budget Reduction Update
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have contributed to this edition of The Scope with its new look. The Scope is now in its sixth year providing news and updates for all of us. This electronic communiqué in conjunction with the print edition of Frontiers provides news and events to a wide variety of people in and outside of Tennessee. Thanks again for a job well done! I would imagine the principal news item on our minds today is the economy and, in particular, the status of the Graduate School of Medicine. As you know, our state-appropriated dollars will shrink significantly as of July 1, 2009. The Dean's Office is working with each of our Departmental Chairs as well as support office Directors to prepare for this change with as little impact on our mission as possible. As the State of Tennessee winds its way through upcoming months we know that a request for further reductions can be made. While the process is difficult at times, you should know we are fortunate to have Chairs and support office Directors who not only provide superb leadership but operate in a very collegial fashion to meet the demands facing the Graduate School of Medicine. There is no doubt this attitude and cooperation will allow us to prevail during these difficult times. James J. Neutens, PhD, FASHA In the Spotlight Stevens Surgery Broadcast Via Satellite
Scott Stevens, MD, professor of Surgery, was featured in the December 2008 edition of East Tennessee Medical News for performing two vascular surgeries Oct. 3, 2008, while up to 400 physicians watched via satellite from Phoenix, Ariz. Dr. Stevens participated in a national conference, Below the Knee, allowing physicians to communicate with Stevens throughout the procedures. Dr. Stevens said the purpose of the exercise was to share information with other physicians to educate and ultimately improve patient care nationwide. Father of Aerobics, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, to Speak in Knoxville Boling Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Health Policy Forum Presents
In 1968, Kenneth Cooper, MD, MPH, launched a new movement in America called aerobic exercise. Now, backed by years of research findings that confirm his message, Dr. Cooper continues his mission: to promote proper exercise, diet, and emotional balance for optimum health and longevity. Dr. Cooper has been named the 2009 University of Tennessee Boling Distinguished Visiting Professor and will present "Achieving a Lifetime of Good Health while Lowering Healthcare Costs" on Jan. 29, at the Knoxville Convention Center. The forum will include Knoxville area business leaders who will present a panel discussion, "Executive Insights on Personal and Corporate Wellness," encouraging audience members' interaction. The forum is sponsored by UT Medical Center, UT Graduate School of Medicine, UT College of Business Administration, Knoxville, and the Knoxville Chamber. A registration fee of $35 includes forum and breakfast. For information and to reserve a seat, contact UT Medical Center Office of Development, development@utmck.edu, 305-6611. Christopher Clark, MD, Assistant Professor, Pathology Rong Zeng, MD, Assistant Professor, Radiology Staff: News The Scope has a new look!
Out with the old, in with the new Scope. In its sixth year of publication, The Scope e-newsletter now has a new layout and design for a fresher, faster read. Previously published bi-monthly, The Scope will now be sent via e-mail monthly and is always available online at http://gsm.utmck.edu/news/scope.htm. The next issue of The Scope is planned for release Feb. 3. We want your feedback! Let us know what you think of the new design and any ideas you may have for The Scope by sending an e-mail to GSMNews@utmck.edu. Frontiers to Focus on Public Service The UT Graduate School of Medicine and UT Medical Center together form the only academic medical center in the region, and as a regional resource, we have a responsibility to support the community in worthwhile and meaningful ways. Watch this spring for the fourth issue in a four-part series focusing on our mission of education, research, patient care and public service to learn more about how our physicians go beyond expectations to serve the community. Frontiers is a quarterly publication for alumni and friends, produced by UT Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine. Want to receive Frontiers in the mail? Pathology Using DEXIS Technology Pathology has purchased a DEXIS (Digital Electronic X-ray Imaging System) for use in the Regional Forensic Center and for mass disaster preparedness training. DEXIS provides interactivity between the clinical dental office and forensic anthropologists or pathologists working in the field or laboratory. This software allows shared e-mail transport of full-mouth or bitewing series views for comparative dental examination used in the positive identification process. The forensic application software was originally developed to expeditiously secure postmortem dental images for comparison in the positive identification process and to replace traditional oral autopsy procedures.Group Insurance Premiums Unchanged for 2009
