Children's Hospital and The University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville Announce Pediatric Residency Program

East Tennessee Children's Hospital (ETCH) and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) in Knoxville are collaborating to launch a pediatric residency program. This is the first pediatric graduate medical education (GME) program between the two organizations. This partnership re-establishes formalized pediatric training for the greater Knoxville region for the first time in nearly 25 years. Children’s Hospital will welcome their first class of residents beginning July 2027. Once established, this pediatric residency program is expected to grow to 18-24 residents (between all classes) annually.

This collaboration builds upon an existing relationship between ETCH and UTGSM for clinical rotations of adult medicine residents that includes family medicine, urology, and general or oral surgery. The new pediatric residency program will be a rigorous 36-month training program for physicians seeking to become licensed and board-certified pediatricians.

"This partnership validates our commitment to the growing needs of our region by providing state-of-the-art health education for future pediatricians and pediatric specialists. We are thrilled to embark in this training opportunity with UTGSM to best serve our patients," said Matt C. Schaefer, President and CEO of East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

"We are excited to partner with ETCH in the launch of a new pediatric residency, which will significantly expand our core mission of training the next generation of physicians. This new endeavor deepens our longstanding relationship with ETCH and promises to improve the care of the residents of East Tennessee," said Robert M. Craft, MD, Dean of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine.
