Stuart E. Van Meter, MD Named Chair of Pathology

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) has named, Stuart E. Van Meter, MD, as Chair of the Department of Pathology effective August 1, 2023. Dr. Van Meter took on the role of Interim Chair on November 1, 2022, succeeding Dr. Lisa Duncan, who had been serving as Chair since 2011.

"The Graduate School of Medicine and the Department of Pathology are incredibly fortunate to have a leader with Dr. Van Meter’s experience and commitment in this role, particularly as his department undergoes a generational transition of faculty," said Dean Craft. "I have thanked him in person and I want to also thank him publicly for stepping back into the demands of leadership."

Dr. Van Meter's journey in the field of medicine began when he completed his undergraduate degree at Clemson University in South Carolina in 1982, after which he obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1986. Dr. Van Meter completed his Pathology Residency at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine in June 1991, and has been a full-time pathologist at the UT Medical Center since then, accumulating a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Over the course of his career, he has authored more than 25 publications and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998. Dr. Van Meter has been an integral part of the academic mission at UTMC for over 30 years, and he previously served as Chair of the Department of Pathology from 2003 to 2011.

It is a privilege to both lead and to serve such excellent and dedicated faculty," said Dr. Van Meter. "This department will continue to pursue its clinical and academic missions; continue its support of our Centers of Excellence; and we will build on the success of those who have come before."
