UT Science Forum Discusses Malaria November 22

The UT Science Forum | presented by Quest offers a weekly lecture on current science, medical, or technology developments. On November 22, 2013, Dr. Nathan Schmidt, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, will speak on "Infection with the Malaria Parasite: Malaria Is Only Half the Problem" from 12 to 1 p.m.

The parasite that causes malaria has proven to be a mighty challenge and it has evaded essentially all experimental vaccines. Consequently, new approaches are desperately needed to treat this disease. Current research is aimed at treating malaria through probiotics and dietary supplementation with sucralose.

The Science Forum is free and open to the public. Meetings are located in Thompson-Boling Arena Dining room C-D on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Bring lunch or purchase it from the Arena.

This will be the last science forum of the fall semester. The series will begin again in January 2014.
