Genetic Center Participates in Health Fairs Across TN As part of the UT Genetic Center's commitment to outreach and public education, Dee White, Coordinator of the Newborn Screening Program for East Tennessee, "hits the road" each year during Health Fair season. This year, so far, we have set up educational exhibits at 10 Health Fairs in Knox,Sevier, Cocke, and Hamblen Counties. The exhibit has a display board with information about Sickle Cell and other hemoglobinopathies. We also hand out educational materials, answer questions and, with the help of a volunteer phlebomotist, offer free hemoglobinopathy testing. Over 1,200 people attended the events this year. It is still commonly thought that Sickle Cell is a condition that is of concern only to people of color. At least one third of the babies born in East Tennessee who test positive for Sickle Cell Trait are identified as Caucasian. All the more reason to continue the efforts at outreach and education.
