Influences on Practice, Risks of Medications Top Alley Lecture Agenda

What socioeconomic influences impact oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) practice, and what effect do Generation X and Generation Y have on the OMS professional?  These influences, as well as discussion of risks of certain medications used in OMS procedures, will be the topics of the biennial Dr. R. Ben Alley Lecture Series: Critical Issues in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Nov. 8, 7:00 a.m.-noon, Morrison’s Conference Center at UT Medical Center.  The only conference of its kind in the region, the Alley Lecture will be led by Leon Assael, D.M.D., professor and chair, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry, and graduate of Columbia, Harvard and Vanderbilt universities.  Registration for this important lecture is available at www.tennessee.edu/cme/BenAlley2008, and early registration ends Nov. 3.  Academy of General Dentistry credit and CEUs are available.  The Dr. R. Ben Alley Lecture Series is presented by the UT Graduate School of Medicine and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is directed by Eric Carlson, D.M.D., M.D., Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  The biennial Dr. R. Ben Alley Lecture Series is made possible through a memorial endowment fund established by Dr. Alley’s family, colleagues, patients and friends.

UT Graduate School of Medicine Announces New Radiology Chair

Dr. J. Mark McKinneyThe University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Office of the Dean announces that J. Mark McKinney, M.D., has been named chair of the Department of Radiology.  He will join the Graduate School of Medicine Sept. 1.

“The Graduate School of Medicine is very pleased to bring Dr. McKinney on board as the chair of Radiology.  He has a unique set of skills, including a clinical background in interventional radiology, that will be a great asset to the Graduate School,” said James J. Neutens, Ph.D., Dean, UT Graduate School of Medicine.

A native of Greeneville, TN, McKinney said, “I’m glad to have the opportunity to be back in East Tennessee and to work with my colleagues in the Department of Radiology as an Interventional Radiologist. I look forward to providing a full range of minimally invasive procedures that will enhance the healthcare of the citizens of East Tennessee.  I am also excited to work with the Graduate School of Medicine to further develop the academic and educational goals of the department.”

Previously with the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., McKinney served as chair of the Mayo Clinic Hospital Radiology Practice Team; assistant program director of the Radiology Residency Program for the Department of Radiology; assistant professor of Radiology for the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine; and section head of Interventional Radiology for the Department of Radiology.
McKinney earned his medical degree at Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, Calif., where he also completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowship training in interventional radiology.  He was appointed chief resident during his residency.

UT Graduate School of Medicine Announces New OB/GYN Chair

Dr. Bobby HowardThe University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Office of the Dean announces that Bobby Howard, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., has been named chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Currently an associate professor for the Graduate School, Howard will commence as chair Sept. 1.

“The Graduate School is very pleased that Dr. Howard will be serving as chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology,” said James J. Neutens, Ph.D., Dean, UT Graduate School of Medicine.  “He has specialized training in maternal-fetal medicine, which is high-risk pregnancy, and has a unique set of skills that will help the Graduate School of Medicine meet its mission of excellence in education, research and patient care.”

In addition to associate professor, Howard currently serves as division director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and medical director of the Regional Perinatal Center at UT Medical Center.
“Each team member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is steadfastly committed to improving women’s health throughout East Tennessee,” Howard said.  “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve such a distinguished group of educators and healthcare providers as department chairman.”

Originally from Birmingham, Ala., Howard earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, where he also completed his residency training in OB/GYN.  He received his fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine from Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash.

Clanton wins CEM Research Symposium Award

Dr. ClantonColin Clanton, M.D., Chief Resident, Anesthesiology, won the Award of Excellence in the intern/resident category at the second annual Comparative and Experimental Medicine Research Symposium June 17 on UT campus. 

The symposium was in a meeting format with 10-minute presentations, the most difficult length of formal scientific presentations. Dr. Clanton participated in a presentation titled, “Absolute Clot Strength of Multi-Trauma Patients Increases During Transit to the Emergency Department.”

The Graduate School of Medicine co-sponsored the symposium with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station and UT Knoxville Office of Research.

Heart, Lung, Vascular Update is Focus of October Conference

Regardless of age or race, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases are major causes of mortality in Tennessee, and new strategies and treatment options are coming to light every day.  Heart, Lung, Vascular: Update for Primary Care Providers, October 3-4, 2008, UT Conference Center, Knoxville, is a CME conference that can help physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals tackle this looming health issue by providing the latest information and tools from regional experts.  This year’s conference will explore symptomatic aortic stenosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, claudication, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, and lipid-lowering strategies.  This conference is presented by the UT Graduate School of Medicine and Department of Medicine and directed by Stuart Bresee, M.D., Department of Medicine.  For information and registration, visit www.tennessee.edu/cme/HLV2008 or call 865-305-9190.

Dissertation Seminar July 11

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Comparative and Experimental Medicine Graduate Program will co-host a Dissertation Seminar with the UT College of Veterinary Medicine Friday, July 11, at 11 a.m. in room C228 of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on UT campus.
