Grants & Contracts Discussion Deborah L. Smith, Ed.D., Director of the UT Office of Research Administration will speak to interested UTGSM employees regarding grants and contracts. The discussion will be held on Monday, July 31, 2006 beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Preston Medical Library Conference Room. The 9 a.m. session will be related to Electronic Grant Submissions. At 2 p.m. the topic is processing grants & contracts, contract vs. grant, subcontracts, and service contracts or agreements. Everyone involved with grants or contracts is invited to attend. Tuesday, July 25, 2006 Ruffner Appointed UTHSC Interim Dean of the College of Medicine, Chattanooga B. Winfred Ruffner, Jr., MD, an accomplished leader in medical oncology, will assume the interim dean position of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine, Chattanooga, on August 1 for a one-year period. Dr. Ruffner, associate professor of medicine at UTHSC, Chattanooga, has been actively involved in determining medical policy for the Erlanger Health Systems, Chattanooga, through his participation on several hospital committees. He will replace Ronald G. Blankenbaker, MD, who is stepping down to pursue special projects at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Dr. Ruffner’s impact is felt on the state level as well through his position as a trustee in the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA). He represents the TMA as a member of the TennCare Stakeholder Group and is also an appointee to the Governor’s Safety Net Study Committee. Prior to assuming his current position, Dr. Ruffner was assistant dean of the UTHSC Chattanooga College of Medicine from 1997 to 2004. He continues as chairman of UT Physicians, a clinical practice group in Chattanooga. Dr. Ruffner holds a medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed fellowships at the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics, National Heart Institute, National Institutes of Health.“We appreciate Dr. Blankenbaker’s contribution to the UT Health Science Center and wish him the best as he pursues ongoing grant research,” said Michael R. Caudle, MD, vice chancellor Health System Affairs at the University of Tennessee. “Dr. Ruffner is an experienced administrator who will support our search for a full-time dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine in Chattanooga.”

Kabalka Honored As GSM Endowed Chair George W. Kabalka, PhD, The Robert H. Cole Foundation Endowed Chair of Neuroscience,
was recently honored at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center commencement exercises held in Memphis. Dr. Kabalka received a medal for his accomplishments in the field of Neuroscience as an endowed chair awarded by Chancellor William (Bill) F. Owen, Jr., MD, during the ceremony.
Dr. Kabalka received his BS degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1965 and his PhD from Purdue University (under the guidance of Professor Herbert C. Brown) in 1970. Dr. Kabalka joined the UT Knoxville chemistry faculty in 1970. He was named the first endowed professor at UTGSM in 1994.
"Robert H. Cole was a great visionary and I endeavor to honor his memory through my continuing efforts in the field of neuroscience research," said Dr. Kabalka. Dr. James J. Neutens accompanied Dr. Kabalka to Memphis for the award ceremony and praised Dr. Kabalka's research career efforts.

Second Quarter Edition of Frontiers Magazine Now on Newsstands Frontiers is a publication of the University of Tennessee Medical Center and the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Grant Workshop for GSM Faculty, Researchers and Staff "Getting the Grant: Strategies for Securing Collaborative Grants" is the title of a workshop to be held Monday, June 26, 2006 from 3:30 - 5:30 pm in the Morrison' Conference Room at UT Medical Center. Israel Goldberg, PhD, President of Health Research Associates will conduct the workshop. The event is sponsored by the UTHSC Vice-Chancellor for Research and the GSM Dean's Office. Since seating is limited, please make your reservations by emailing Marti Willen in the Dean's Office.
UT Health Science Center has contracted with Dr. Goldberg and his company, Health Research Associates, to provide grant consulting services to UTHSC researchers. In this workshop, which will be available in Knoxville by video teleconference, Dr. Goldberg will explore general strategies for collaborative funding. Dr. Goldberg's firm provides intensive consultation and advice to health care institutions in planning for the development of research programs and in securing research grant support.
Monday, June 5, 2006 UTHSC Welcomes Devon Gosnell as Associate General Counsel
Devon L. Gosnell, an Associate General Counsel for The University of Tennessee, will be assigned to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in July and relocate to the UTHSC main campus in Memphis. Her responsibilities will include handling litigation for UTHSC and other University units in West Tennessee, as well as providing advice to UTHSC administrators on legal issues.
Since November 2004, Gosnell has served as an Associate General Counsel in the main office of the University's Vice President and General Counsel located in Knoxville. She has represented the University in federal and state courts. Before joining UT, Gosnell was in private practice for nine years handling employment litigation at Ford & Harrison and McKnight, Hudson, Lewis & Henderson, working in their offices in Memphis and Tampa, FL. Prior to joining the firm she spent 19 years in Memphis working for the Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee. During that period, her work entailed prosecuting criminal cases and defending the United States in civil cases.
Gosnell holds both her bachelor’s and juris doctor degrees from West VirginiaUniversity in Morgantown, W. Va. She also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Memphis and a master of divinity degree from Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis. She is licensed to practice law in Tennessee, West Virginia and Florida.
