Mock Trial Set for Friday, February 24

When the gavel falls to call the courtroom to order, C.J. Craig will have her 'day in court' against Marcus Welby and Dr. Irby Chair.

In a twist on real life, the TV characters will be played by real doctors and nurses who are examined and cross-examined by real lawyers.   The mock trial, sponsored by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Office of Human Subject Protections,  is designed to educate clinical researchers, IRB members and administrators about the results of everyday research decisions.

The role of judge will be played by Rep. Doug Overbey (Tennessee House of Representatives).  Local attorneys, David Waite and Steve Daves, will play the parts of the plaintiff's and defendants' attorneys, respectively.  Martha Earl (Preston Medical Library) will play the part of the aggrieved research participant, C.J. Craig. Dr. Larry Davis (University Family Physicians) will be physician/investigator Dr. Marcus Welby who conducted the research study in his private office.  Dr. George Schuchmann will play the part of Dr. Irby Chair, the IRB Chairman.

Issues in the case will include how clinical trials agreements may give rise to conflict of interest problems, adequate training of research staff, adequacy of IRB review and documentation, ethical considerations of a wash-out period, and much more.

The mock trial conference will be offered at Wood Auditorium, UT Medical Center, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24. For more information and registration, please contact Sherry Brewer , Office of Research Integrity.

The Preston Medical Library has invited a representative from RefWorks to give an overview of RefWorks and answer your questions on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 . The presentation will start at 1:30 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. This session is appropriate for those who are already using RefWorks and have questions and for those who just want to learn more about it. It is a wonderful resource for anyone who publishes anything that requires a bibliography and/or keeps up with the medical/scientific literature. Please call (305-9525) or e-mail the library if you plan to attend this informative session.

What is RefWorks? RefWorks is a tool for producing bibliographies and organizing references. This software is web-based and can be accessed from anywhere. Additionally, a feature called Write-N-Cite is available to link RefWorks to Microsoft Word, and the RefShare feature allows the sharing of references with other RefWorks users. What can you do with RefWorks?

  • Import references from PubMed, WorldCat, and other databases
  • Organize your references into sharable folders (great for collaboration!)
  • Produce a bibliography for a presentation
  • Cite references and have a perfectly formatted bibliography for your next paper
