FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/10/05
Stockton Joins Tsunami Disaster Medical Team
M. David Stockton, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, UT Graduate School of Medicine , is part of an International Medical Corps (IMC) medical team that was airlifted Saturday bound for the Tsunami disaster ridden area of Indonesia . The IMC team plans to set up a field hospital in Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. Banda Aceh is considered the "ground zero" of the disaster.

Dr. Stockon left January 7, 2005 and will join a medical team of six family practice physicians, four emergency room physicians, two general surgeons, two anesthesiologists, six operating room technicians and six emergency room nurses. The team is coordinated by the International Medical Corps (IMC) . In a press statement released by IMC, Nancy A. Aossey, President and CEO of IMC, said "We are extremely grateful that so many trauma specialists volunteered for this emergency mission." "The fact that with just two days' notice they are getting on a plane to put their skills to use on the other side of the world is testimony to their commitment and to IMC's rapid response capacity," she said.

"Without the support of Dr. Gregory Blake, Chairman of Family Medicine and the other faculty members in the our department, I would not be able to go. I want them to know how much I appreciate their generosity and help in allowing me to participate in this project," Stockton said. "Please keep us and the victims in your thoughts and prayers," he said.

Dr. Stockton anticipates he will be in Banda Aceh for around three weeks until other medical teams are rotated in. More up to date information from the field is available through the IMC website.
