Welcome to The Medical Explorations Program
What is the Medical Explorations Program?
Dr. Mitchell Goldman, a physician
in the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical
Center, began Medical Explorations in 1991 after being approached
by a West High high school student who wished to learn more about
the medical field.
Seventeen years and many students later, the program, still headed
by Dr. Goldman, has been expanded to include not only local high
school students but some interested college students as well.
The Fall program consists
of once a month lectures that runs September through April.
The six week Summer program consists of one week rotations in various
departments of the hospital. As the program has grown, so has the
demand for instruction in other specialties.
The Physicians Medical Education and Research Foundation, Graduate
School of Medicine under then Associate Dean Dr. I Reid Collmann,
along with the University Health Systems funded a stipend for students
who wanted to take part in the program but because of financial
obligations couldn't afford to. Today, the stipends are continued
through a generous grant from the Cole Foundation and other individual
private donations. If you are interested in supporting the
Medical Explorations Program through a donation, please contact
us via email or phone.
