Altavista
-The service had two innovations that set it ahead of the other
search engines that could cover a lot more Web pages than were believed
to exist, and an efficient search back-end running on advanced hardware.
These made AltaVista the first searchable, full-text database of
a large part of the World Wide Web. AltaVista provides free translation,
branded Babel
Fish, which translates text between several world languages.
Ask.com
- The current incarnation of AskJeeves, this is a solid search engine
that produced excellent retrieval. Search options include images,
news, blogs & feeds, maps, and more.
DogPile -
All the best search engines piled into one. Claims to include Google,
Yahoo, Windows Live Search and Ask.
Excite
- Easy to use with convenient buttons for searching, video, images,
audio, and news.
Google
- Google is a search engine owned by Google, Inc. whose mission statement
is to "organize the world's information and make it universally
accessible and useful". The largest search engine on the web,
Google receives several hundred million queries each day through
its various services. In addition to its tool for searching webpages,
Google also provides services for searching images, Usenet newsgroups,
news websites, videos, searching by locality, maps, and items for
sale online.

HONselect
- Health On the Net--An integrated healthcare search engine that
combines five information types: MeSH terms, scientific articles,
healthcare news, Web sites, and multimedia.
Live Search - This search engine from Microsoft has many of the same features as Google. Included is an academic search of scholarly journals with direct links to Preston's electronic full text resources when available. Formatting for Refworks and other reference management software is also offered.
Yahoo
- In years past Yahoo was distinguished by its excellent subject
directory of hand selected resources. The directory remains, but
competes with similar search engines using its own crawled database.
Like Google and Live Search, Yahoo offers search options for images,
video, and news.
