What the Endowment Benefits
The Frank London, M.D. Medical Library Endowment
honors his interest in the value of educational technology. Earnings
from the endowment provide support for technological advancements
and enhancements within the library. Improved access to national
medical databases, providing software upgrades and innovative technology-based
teaching tools are just a few of the areas where funds from the
London Endowment help to maintain Dr. London's desire for the Preston
Medical Library and Learning Resource Center to remain "state of
the art."
About Dr. London
Born in a small town in Texas, Frank London received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed postgraduate training at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and National Heart Institute with board certification in internal medicine and cardiology. Here is just a sampling of Dr. London's distinguished career:
- Founded the Knoxville Cardiovascular Group in 1962
- Practiced cardiovascular medicine for 40 years
- Past President of the East Tennessee Heart and Tennessee Heart Association
- Served as Chief of Staff at UT Memorial Hospital
- Educated and mentored physicians who, today, are treating countless thousands of people throughout East Tennessee and the nation
- Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine - remembered by his students as being accessible, dedicated and thoughtfully knowledgeable with regard to treating the disease and the patient
- Received Professor Emeritus distinction from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine
Dr. London faithfully served the University of Tennessee through his active membership on the University's Development Council and provided years of service in many non-medical endeavors:
Contributed gifts of money and time in raising friends/funds in support of the Preston Medical Library and Learning Resource Center within the Graduate School of Medicine on the UT Medical Center campus
Chaired a 1996 drive, raising almost $400,000 to equip and furnish the library's new, enlarged location
Among first to be listed on specially designed plaque honoring library patrons While he has physically left us, Dr. London's presence will forever be felt by all who benefit from the information provided within the Preston Medical Library and Learning Resource Center.
How to Make a Gift
Gifts may be made in a variety of ways such as cash,
appreciated securities, and real estate and may be pledged over
a number of years. Gifts to the endowment are considered charitable
contributions to the University of Tennessee by the Internal Revenue
Service and may qualify the donor for membership in University gift
and recognition clubs and societies, including:
- University Circle Club ($750+ annually)
- President's Club ($10,000+)
- Tennessee Society (cumulative giving of $25,000+)
- Heritage Society (cumulative giving of $50,000+)
- Benefactor's Society (cumulative giving of $100,000+)
- Founder's Society (cumulative giving of $1 million+)
A gift of cash may be contributed outright or pledged over a suggested three-year pledge term or longer. Presidents' Club and Society level gifts may be extended over a ten-year period. University of Tennessee and UHS employees may pay pledges through payroll deduction, if desired.
