Common Diseases in Tennessee - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is the condition linked to the fourth most common cause of death in Tennessee - chronic lower respiratory diseases. In 2007, chronic lower respiratory diseases caused 5.57% of the deaths in the state (The Tennessee Department of Health, Tennessee Deaths 2007).

American Lung Association - A national organization that focuses on the prevention of lung disease and the promotion of lung health. Contains information on specific lung diseases, research, treatment, air quality, and smoking. See the COPD Center for specific information on this disease.

COPD-ALERT - This organization is a support and advocacy group for people with COPD with information on symptoms, prevention, treatment, and living with COPD. Provides a link to online medical resources.

Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease - This organization tries to increase public awareness of COPD and improve treatment and prevention of the disease. Provides general information and a patient guide for COPD. Also offers a questionnaire to determine if an individual is at risk for COPD.

MedlinePlus - A National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health Web site that contains news and overviews about COPD along with information on diagnoses, symptoms, treatments, disease management, nutrition, recovery, and research.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute - Provides overviews and fact sheets on COPD and information on clinical trials.
