Common Diseases in Tennessee - Cancer (all types)

Cancer is the condition linked to the second most common cause of death in Tennessee - malignant neoplasms (abnormal, invasive growths of tissue). In 2009, malignant neoplasms caused 23% of the deaths in the state (The Tennessee Department of Health, Tennessee Deaths 2009).

Below are links to information on cancer.

American Cancer Society– Provides information on specific cancer types, treatments, healthy living, prevention, statistics, research, clinical trials, news, and community activities and resources.

Breast Cancer- The U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health offer an interactive tutorial on breast cancer the most common form of cancer in women.  The tutorial includes information on causes of cancer, symptoms, diagnosis, stages of breast cancer, treatment options, and follow-up care.

Cancer Hope Network– A non-profit organization that provides cancer patients and their families with one-on-one support by matching them with volunteers who have undergone similar cancer experiences.

Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation – Provides information about specific cancers, current cancer research, healthy living, and cancer treatment options.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention– Provides information on specific cancer types, risk factors, statistics, survivorship, and cancer control programs.

Children's Cancer Association– Provides a national directory of pediatric resources through its Kids’ Cancer Pages.

MedlinePlus– A National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health Web site that contains news and overviews about cancer along with information on specific cancers, diagnoses, screening, symptoms, treatments, disease management, prevention, alternative therapies, nutrition, recovery, research, and much more.

Medline Plus Information on Breast Cancer-This National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health site contains news and overviews about breast cancer along with information on diagnosis, screening, symptoms, treatments, disease management, prevention, alternative therapies, nutrition, recovery, research, and much more.

Medline Plus Information on Skin Cancer- Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. This National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health site includes news and overview as well as symptoms, treatment, screenings, health check tools, genetics, research, and more.

National Cancer Institute– A National Institutes of Health Web site that contains information on specific types of cancer, clinical trials, treatment, prevention, causes, genetics, coping, statistics, news, and research.

National Children's Cancer Society– A financial aid, advocacy, and support organization that provides educational resources and publications on childhood cancers.

State of Tennessee Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan 2009-2012-Do you want to know what Tennessee is doing about cancer?  The Cancer Control Plan outlines how professionals in healthcare, social work, higher education, government, non-profit agencies and citizens are working together in Tennessee to fight cancer.

The Wellness Community - East Tennessee– A cancer group specifically for the East Tennessee Region that offers support groups, educational workshops, classes in stress reduction, movement, yoga, and relaxation. Web site contains a calendar of local events and a wide variety of Web links and resources on many cancer topics.

Women's Cancer Network– Provides information on the diagnosis, treatment, symptoms, care, clinical trials, and research on cancers that affect women.
