Common Diseases in Tennessee - Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth leading cause of death in Tennessee.  In 2007, Alzheimer’s disease caused 3.99% of the deaths in Tennessee (The Tennessee Department of Health, Tennessee Deaths 2007).

Medline Plus- The National Library of Medicine and National Institutes on Health provide an overview on what Alzheimer’s is and how it affects people.  Topics covered include overview of the disease, latest news, diagnosis/symptoms, prevention/ screening, alternative therapy, disease management, financial issues, and research.

Alzheimer's Disease- The U.S. National Institutes of Health and National Institute on Aging website provide general information on Alzheimer’s, causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment information.

Alzheimer's Association–The Alzheimer’s Association is a national organization that is interested in care, support and research of Alzheimer’s.  This website includes links to education, action, and research for those interested in Alzheimer’s.   

Alzheimer's Caregivers The National Library of Medicine offers a helpful resource for caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s.  Some of the topics covered include an overview of Alzheimer’s, nutrition for individuals with Alzheimer’s, coping strategies and more. Some information is also available in Spanish.

Early-Onset Alzheimer's: When Symptoms Begin Before 65- The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research has created a resource on early-onset Alzheimer’s disease including occurrence, cause, and problems associated specifically with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Modifying the Home- The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation gives a practical guide for how to modify the home environment to make it safer for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Choosing Care Providers The Alzheimer's Association provides information on different care setting options that are available for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Care Finder- Care Finder gives information on planning ahead, care options, coordinating care, and support and resources for those with Alzheimer’s and their families.

Alzheimer's Association, Eastern Tennessee Chapter -The Eastern Tennessee Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association provides support and assistance for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their care givers in Eastern Tennessee.
