Citing Medicine: The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers
The second edition of the National Library of Medicine's style guide includes chapters for all material types - published, unpublished, and online.

Committee on Publication (COPE) Guidelines
A nonprofit group based in the UK which provided guidelines for researchers and publishers on topics such as code of conduct, best practice guidelines and authorship disputes.

Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT)
The 2010 Consort Statement provides an evidence-based, minimum set of recommendations for reporting randomized controlled trials including a 25 point check list and a flow chart.

American Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics. "The most comprehensive ethics guide for physicians."

Instructions for Authors in the Health Sciences
The Mulford Library at the University of Toledo offers this great resource to quickly find the Instructions for Authors to over 6000 journals in the health sciences.

Instructions for Authors for Elsevier Journals
A searchable list of journals published by Elsevier with links to the Instructions for Authors.

ISI Journal Citation Reports
This resource will help you to evaluate and compare journals. It evaluates citation data and provides information such as the most frequently cited journals in a field and Impact Factor.

National Library of Medicine recommended formats for bibliographic citation.
Provides instructions for formatting citations to different types of materials - both print and electronic.

Medical Eponyms

Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology.  Consensus statement from MOOSE (Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) Group, providing specifications on reporting results of meta-analyses.

RefWorks Reference managment. Save your reference list and be able to select a format appropriate to a specific journal or style.

Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Publication
Established in 1976 by a group of scientists the "Uniform Requirements state the ethical principles in the conduct and reporting of research and provide recommendations relating to specific elements of editing and writing."

Web of Science
Web of Science provides researchers, administrators, faculty and students with quick, powerful access to the world's leading citation databases

Tools

Citation Matcher
This simple form can be used to find the complete reference when the information you have is incomplete. It checks the information you provide against PubMed's citations.

RefWorks
Use this software to simplify the publication process by organizing your citations, producing bibliographies and integrating citations while you write your paper. This service is web based so you can get it anywhere you are working. The Preston Medical Library has a site license. You can import your references from other software easily.

Services

Literature Searching
The professional library staff is trained in searching PubMed and the National Library of Medicine's databases as well as other databases. There are no fees for this service (except for subscribers). Request a search using our online form or contact the library.

Reference Checking - Library staff will check your list of references for accuracy. Allow at least 2 weeks. For more details contact the library.
