Start here to look up words you are not familiar with:
MedlinePlus Dictionary
MedlinePlus includes a medical encyclopedia and dictionary, in addition to extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs and health information.
Stedman's Medical Dictionary
Located in the StatRef electronic book collection, this is a comprehensive dictionary of medical terms.
Medical Terminology Course
An easy to use free resource on Medical Terminology, produced by Des Moines University.
Textbooks
Although textbooks are not considered primary sources of information, they can be useful in gaining an understanding of your topic.

Search the catalog for books owned by Preston Medical Library. Please note that we share the catalog with UT Main campus Library (Hodges) so not all the books you find will be located here. Look for the Preston Location.
Electronic Textbooks
Merck Publications
From this list of reference books available, select the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, a medical textbook for healthcare professionals. You will find chapters on all categories of diseases. This is a good place to start for overview of information.
StatRef
A collection of 39 medical textbook searchable by keyword. There are many good reference books in this collection.
MDConsult Books
This book collection includes 50 leading medical reference books which are searchable by keyword or you may browse through the table of contents. There are also over 50,000 high-quality searchable images.
UpToDate
This is essentially a quarterly updated textbook of expert opinion on over 7300 topics in 13 medical specialties. There are also many graphs and figures that are helpful in understanding your topic and links to the abstracts of articles which are cited in the text.
Medical Databases
PubMed
When searching for primary literature for your topic this is a great place to start. This database indexes all the major medical journals and there are links to our full text electronic version of the articles.
Tennessee Electronic Library
Use the Health Reference Center Academic database in this collection.
Dynamed
DynaMed is a clinical reference tool used by physicians while they are in the clinical setting. There are 3,000 reviewed medical topics which are updated regularly with evidence based information from 500 medical journals. There are links to the PubMed journal abstracts imbedded in the text, which makes this product especially useful.
Statistical and Demographic Information
Health Information Tennessee
This is a good source of health statistics for the state of Tennessee including information on birth, mortality, population, and health facilities.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Data and Statistics
Two resources of interest are located at this CDC Website. Health, United States is an annual report on trends in health statistics and Faststats provides quick access to statistics on topics of public health importance.
US Census Bureau
A resource for demographic, ethnic and health information such as health insurance and disability.

AMA Medical Ethics
American Medical Association web site contains information on medical ethics topics including the AMA Code of Medical Ethics.
